Hey guys just wondering what if I retake a class becuase of a low grade?

is it replaced?

Or avg in?

This is a really good question for the Counselors at the schools to which you are applying. Some Nursing School Admissions Committees will accept the newest grade to replace the old without penalty. Others will penalize you (take off points toward your pre-req or co-req GPA) for taking a class more then once.

As for your overall GPA, the old grade is averaged in with the new one unless you were given permission to have the old one removed from your transcripts. Good luck.

Your college catalog (handbook) should have this rule as far as grade forgiveness goes. Combine that knowledge with the nursing program admittance requirements and you should get a pretty clear picture of how re-taking a course will affect your admittance into the program.

I'm having to do this with a course so I did all the research recently. At my school in particular, you aren't penalized until you re-take a course the third time, then it affects your pre-req GPA which is the only admitting criteria for this particular program.

Call your nursing program administrator, she should have a quick answer for you.

Like the others said, this is a school policy issue. At my school, for instance, a person could take a course over again and the new grade would be averaged in (in the semester the repeat was taken). The previous course would still show in the semester in which it was taken, AND the grade it received, but there would be a code next to it indicating it was exempt from the average. So, in other words, anyone viewing the transcript could see that you repeated a course, how many times, and what you got for those courses, but it would only be "counted" the last time in terms of GPA.

As an FYI, if you stay within a school network (like SUNY), then you can't get away from your grades, even if you complete a degree and are going to the same or another SUNY school for another degree. No starting over; it's a cumulative GPA. But if you go to a different system, say, private, then you start from scratch with them.

Check with your school :)

I applied to Nursing Program and 2 different schools. At one they only look at the highest grades. At the other I told them that I had retook English Comp and got and A the second time and she said that they would average both grades. She said that I could have took basketweaving and gotten and A and it would have counted the same.:o Every school is different so just ask at the schools you are interested in.

God Bless,

Mary Ann
