GPA Help

What is the best way to raise your GPA? When I was first in college (20 years ago) I had no direction in life. My GPA wasn't the greatest. I went back to school a few years ago in hopes of going to nursing school but my GPA wasn't even close to be able to apply. Buckled down and got my A.A. degree with a 2.43 GPA. Since I couldn't get into nursing school I went onto work on my B.S. in Health Science. I have a 3.55 right now - just in my BS coursework. I sent all my transcripts to apply to a accelerated BSN program but was notified by the admissions office that my GPA is too low to apply. When they did my transcripts from everywhere my GPA didn't improve much and actually dropped to a 2.22. I honestly don't understand how GPA is calculated but it seems like all I am doing is spinning my wheels. I am retaking my science classes since they are over 10 years old in hopes that will help. In the meantime I am at a loss at what to do. Should I look for a program that calculated GPA from the last x amount of hours I have completed - even if it means moving? Or should I just accept the fact that I won't have the high enough GPA to apply. My friend suggested that I look into going to a LPN program but I am still in the same boat it looks like.

Any suggestions?

It seems like the school you applied to takes a cumulative gpa. Every course you've ever taken is included in the calculation, so retaking classes would make your cumulative gpa look lower than your university's gpa.

In that case, all you can do is keep truckin'. The more A's you make, the higher it'll go.

This calculator will tell you how many credits of A's you need to take to raise your GPA up to the minimum cut off for the school you're looking at. Just beware...keep your expectations realistic. You probably can't afford to take 300 more credits to raise your GPA to a 3.7. Set your sights for somewhere close to the cut-off for your school.

This calculator is awesome! I just spent about 20 minutes playing with it and it gave me hope that I can actually get my GPA back up where I want it. Thanks!

Note that Accelerated BSN courses can be very, very competitive. In your case you might want to investigate if an LPN or community college ADN/RN program close to you typically accepts people with lower GPA's. If it does, that might be a quicker route to raising your GPA and getting in.

Thank you so much for your help! Its not as bad as I thought!

The fastest way to raise your GPA is to retake the courses that you scored poorly in.
