Seriously... This just stinks
I have A's in both A&P 1 & 2 and will most likely pull an A in Micro this semester and medical term.. I have ALL my other pre req's done... NOTHING else to take this summer or next semester...
I have a 3.4 GPA and a 21 on my ACT, apparently my ACT is not high enough.. The school I go to does not do a entrance exam or HESI style test...
They don't even do a essay or interview as to why you want to be a RN..
Solely academic...
SOOOO what would you suggest I do??? Take classes pertaining to a BSN instead of a 2 year?? since I doubt I will be able to get it high enough for them... I have taken it 5 times already ACT that is, and I'm just at a loss.. I hate to waste another year just idling..
I also just got my CNA/CNT certification... So in the mean time I can work and gain experience...
Hi Mentalageis16,I would talk to your advisor at your college or someone at student services to see what they can do at your particular school. Below is the data that applies specifically to my school, WSU in Utah, copied from their website.
Academic renewal allows students the opportunity to recalculate their GPA by discounting grades of D+ or lower which were earned six or more years prior to the date of petition.
Courses completed prior to the awarding of a certificate, associate or bachelor's degree do not qualify for academic renewal.
Students must be currently registered, attending and have their tuition paid in full.
Academic renewal may be requested only once during a student's academic career.
I know that my school is not the only school in the area that does this, but I'm sure each of the others probably have slightly different requirements. I would look into though if I were you. I know it has made my husband's transcript much less ugly and he wouldn't have been able to raise his GPA to the level that it is so quickly without this opportunity. The only thing that I can think of that I know isn't mentioned above is that UWs (unofficial withdrawals) are not removed because they are so frowned upon and so he still has one or two of those that is pulling down his average. I hope that this helps and that you are able to find out some good news about this at your school. Good luck!
Thanks this is great info.. I'll check into it to.. I only have one D on my record (english comp 2) and I'm taking it over this summer... I have 1 C I think but don't plan on taking that one over... I hope that making straights A's since getting back in over a year ago helps...
Yah I have all pre-req done.. All I lack is the nursing classes... UGH..My advisor was really hoping I would get in this fall... She thinks I would do great, being I have been going full time +++ for a year now, and still able to work part time and take care of my kids.. Yah I don't sleep much but I have been making the grades.. THE ONLY reason my GPA is not a 4.0 is from when I went to college 13 years ago and flunked out.. So this coming semester I'm going to take the class that I failed to bring the GPA up even more... I just don't get it... If they were to interview me, they would see that I already know so much.. I have great bedside manner, and I enjoy being around patients, I jump in when other's won't... All my co-workers see this... And it's just sad that the school does not do a interview process...
I applied to one other school I'm sure I did not get in their either...
Guess this summer I'll take classes to work towards BSN.. And just see :)
I have a question..if you went to college that long ago..and you obviously already took college classes, why do they care what your ACT score is? Shouldn't that not matter anymore?? I'm older so I took the ACT in like 86/87 and except for applying for colleges right out of high school....applying to schools over the last 7 years or so, I always skip the part of writing in an ACT score..I leave it blank and it's never been questioned. Do some schools really make you have an ACT score if you went to college years ago??

For this Academic Renewal Program thing.. do you try to get it from the school that you received the bad grades or the school that has the nursing program that you are trying to get in? Thanks for any help!

Yes... There are some people who already had a BSN but only had a 19 on their ACT, they were not accepted... But if you have a 23 or higher you were pretty much accepted... Some of these people were in their mid 50's applying and getting in... The only way the ACT did not matter was if you were a LPN bridging over to the RN, they automatically gave them a 19 on the ACT, but cause their program is different and came into the RN program at a different semester, it did not matter... Stinks really, but I see some reason behind it.. I wish they would interview and see what the intentions of some are, I have already heard some students say they don't want to be RN's and work they just want to be desk nurses and pharm reps or just have the RN behind their name... I want to work and be around the people that need the most help..

O M G! WOW.. I've never heard of an ACT score mattering all those years later. That really sucks hon!! I can see it mattering out of high school of course and maybe if you only had like a year of college..if you were still young..but like after you're an adult student..that shouldn't matter.. WOW.. I'm really shocked! And that makes me so sick....people applying for programs they don't really want to do...and getting in and taking someone else's seat who's heart is completely in it! It's so wrong! I'm so sorry!! You'll find a program though!! Positive vibes coming your way hon!!
The BSN in my area requires ALL applicants to provide ACT scores regardless of how old you are or how long you've already been in school. I dont understand why since they dont even look at the act..the only thing they do is look at the top 76 gpa's and those ppl get in..its really cut and dry..but they still want that ACT score for some reason.

hi redhead77,
thank you for such helpful information!
I was checking with my old school see if there's such thing as academic renewal, and there is!
but the only thing is, in order for me to do that, I will have to attend my old school again and start from scratch to earn another 36 credits or so...and also those "F" are not going to be erased, they will still show up on my transcript. yea, my old school sucks.
