Even though I have trouble doing blood draws with a butterfly needle I was offered a job in the MICU at Vanderbilt. They only have night shift open and I hate nights but with a little coffee I guess I could stand it three nights a week.
I was assured I would get training but I know these have been famous last words in a lot of cases.
Is anyone familiar with Vanderbilt?

They will give you an excellent orientation program. Great news to hear that you got a job offer there.
Well, I decided I wasn't quite ready to take the plunge. Maybe at a later date. I'm going to have to get some more skills.

What a great opportunity. It will require alot of energy and patience but you will gain an enormouse amount of knowledge as well as life experiences that will be invaluable to you in the future. Don't rush yourself it will take at least a good year before you will even start to feel like you are at home
and comfortable to walk in the unit but it will get better.

Hello!
I worked on 7S while in nursing school, I have since moved to another floor. The experience that i received there was outstanding! I did not stay because i wanted to gain med-surg experience but I would like to go back after a year of general med. Most of the patients on MICU already had their lines in or the docs put them in. Rarely did I ever witness a nurse starting a line. The people on the unit are very supportive and would have been there for u until u felt comfortable. If you have not excepted another position call Jan or Julie back and see if a position is still open(the Tennessean had an ad for critical care units and MICU was listed). I miss the floor and my co-workers. The only part that I did not like was the high rate of death on the unit. I know it is expected but it is never easy. I hope u find what u are looking for. Good Luck! Maybe I will see u in line at Mickey D's getting fries before they close! By the way the only reason I am up now is because I work nights. Nights are so laid back, days are to hectic for me-u could not pay me enough to ever go back on days!!!!:roll

I used to work on a stepdown floor at VUMC, so I only saw the inside of trauma and sicu when we were transferring pt. who went bad on us. I wouldn't worry about how good you are at blood draws, most sick pt. will have a picc or a central line, and you can learn as you go. But sticking people wasn't really the hard part for me to learn. Lots of other things are harder. Vanderbilt gets some really sick people, and I'm sure the MICU is full of them.

I have a 2nd interview up there next week. I don't know a great deal about the unit itself, but from what I understand everyone is pretty laid back and there is plenty to do and learn. I'm hoping to get on nights, at least through the winter months. I want to enjoy my 4 hours of daylight.
