Specialties Operating Room

Hello.

I will be starting orientation in the OR soon...(thanks to everyone who previously answered my "common questions")

I have another, 2 actually!!!

1) whats the best shoe? I am leaning toward "Crocs", but I know everyone says they are comfortable, but do they give proper support to prevent your back and legs from aching? I had birkies b4,they were mediocre, and danskos, which made me always twist my ankle, just standing, so I am in need of recommendations!!!

2)I know OR nursing is fast paced, and I also know it is hard for a preceptor to be doing her job, in that environment, and also be teaching you at the same time. I basically learn quick, but my question is, will it be different this time? Is it harder than most areas to learn because of this?(being so fast paced) Be honest!!! I want to know what I will be dealing with..

Thank you again, guys!!!:kiss

Hey.....best wishes in your new endeavor. My orientation was hell for 12 months. No really........only a portion of it was hell. There will be some folks who will go out of their way to make themselves look better by trying to make you look stupid, silly, etc. Just remember, EVERYONE who works in the OR started where you are. I wouldn't trade one day of working in the OR for anything. This is something that I told new nurses that I precepted when they told me how dumb they felt about not knowing anything. Do you know where to clock in? Do you know where the scrubs and locker room are? Do you know how to find your assignment? Do you know how to read the schedule? Do you know how to set up a room for the day? Do you know how page doctors, x-ray, etc? Then you aren't stupid and you DO know a lot. Every building needs to have a good foundation in order to remain strong. I know that you can do it. Just keep telling yourself that.

As far as shoes.........I love my danskos!! Judy

Hi NoCrumping and LadyT618,

First, congratulations and best wishes on your new career path in the OR! I, too, am starting an OR internship in March. I was thinking of getting those Z-coil shoes, ever see them? They're pretty wild looking, but supposed to be incredibly comfortable. But I'm not sure you'd trip or have a problem putting on the footies over the heel coil. Go to http://www.zcoil.com and check them out.

Anybody in the OR wear these shoes? I have Dansko's, and I like them, but my feel still ache after 12 hrs.

Well, Judy, currently I know NONE of what you said, as I am still in "general nursing hospital orientation" right now, BUT, when I DO learn those things, I will feel a whole lot better!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: ( I know what you mean, though :) )

Its just everyone has this perception of the OR being a "tough" place to tap into, people eat new people alive and things like that..so I am anxiously awaiting the first day when I can actually get in there!!!! I am prepared to be patient and have a thick skin, and not take things personally.....and dive right in...thats all I can do for now, right???:uhoh21:

Anybody in the OR wear these shoes?

The Zcoils?

1) Don't have that kind of money

2) That spring looks like something i'd catch on cords, tubing, etc.

Congrats to you too LadyT!!! I can give you a heads up!!!

How long is your orientation?

My orientation is supposed to be 6 months long, then we take an exam. Textbooks provided at no cost, homework daily. Call me a nerd, but I can't wait.

As for the shoes, I'm afraid I might trip over something wearing those things. Don't care how comfortable they are.

I know a couple of ED nurses who wear Z-coils, never have a problem with anything getting stuck or caught in them. My husband and I went to the store in Cincinnati and tried them on--incredibly comfortable and, of course, "bouncy"! But odd looking too...

Good... me too... I actually feel better with alot of classroom time during an orientation.mine is 9 months long........we have a local technical college coming to the hospital to teach the RN's the scrubbing part (the have a 2 yr long scrub tech program, that they are turning into a 3 month program for the RN's in this new program) I am a little nervous, as I said before, but more excited than anything. Is yours the "periop 101" program from AORN?

[color=darkslategray]i do wear them, and though it certainly is possible to catch the coil on stuff, i haven't yet (worn them for over a year). what is more of a problem, though, is that the sole is not as skid-resistant as i'd like, particularly on the floors in our newer ors. when the floor is wet, i am extremely careful as i have had one incident where one foot stopped, and the other kept going...ouch. other than that, they are super comfortable, and i don't want to wear anything else.

I checked the site out, they are bizarre!!! They do, however, look like they would be comfortable.....but I have never seen anybody wear them...plus, they do look like its easy to get tubes and cords stuck around that coil.

How much are they? I didnt see a price anywhere on the website.....

Z-coils are very expensive; when I was at the store in Cincinnati, they were about $170. I think they're supposed to last for up to 5 yrs though. It would be worth it to me if they are as comfortable as the website says. My Danskos are okay, but I'm not in love with them as some are. Different strokes for different folks!

yeah it is the AORN endorsed periop 101 course. I gave my 4 weeks notice last night. It felt so good. :) I cannot wait to start. Mine starts March 6th also like Pitt's own. When does yours start?
