Got Med/Surg position!

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

A hospital I had been waiting to hear back from, called today and offered me a position on either cardiac rehab unit,med/surg,another unit with infectious diseases?, or float.

While I was waiting to hear back from this hospital a big article was in the newspaper saying that the hospital will be "phasing out LPNs" 51 to be exact and will be hiring RNs and CNAs to fill their shoes.

Unless the LPN's would take a drop in pay and work at CNA wages, or further their learning and become RN's.

I feel nervous about starting there, Because it seems like there will be alot of VERY bitter nurses.

But I have bills to pay too..

Any case, I accepted the Med/Surg position on dayshift.

This is my first time working in a hospital. I have been a CNA for 14 years, but always worked in LTC, I decided I needed a change and applied at the Hospital.

Is any shift better to work on then others? These are 8 hour shifts btw.

My tentative start date is May 2.

Also What type of training/orientation do most hospitals offer for new employees?

Any help is appreciated :D

My thoughts exactly. I explained this to her as well and she stated she "didnt think there would be any further problems". Easy to say that when your not actually on the floor working side by side with the girls.

I noticed the other shifts dont have much communication with each other. So that's why I figured it would be safe if I went another shift.I hope they would give me a chance on another shift, but then again she said she wasnt sure if they were still available.

The environment wouldn't be the same on dayshift with the same people. After me making the report. I know deep down it wouldnt.

Otherwise I filled out applications else where today so maybe its back to square 1.

HMMM..Thats tough. Did you have the same "trainer" all 3 days? Was it like this all the days you were on the floor? When she called you princess, do you think she meant it sarcastically? I know I also have a bad habit of caring what people think of me (well in certain situations). You probably should have talked to your trainer there and then about the problems (such as I wasnt aware that I was supposed to chart on those patients). I probably would have done the same thing as you though. Im not exactly sure what happened or how it was meant, since I wasnt there personally, but I would think about it. It might not mean you wont have problems on another shift...it might just be a certain person (or possibly a misunderstanding). When is the manager supossed to let you know, and when do you have to decide? I wish you good luck...! I think the manager should have called you first before talking to anyone else. You can go back and quit if it happens again. Maybe even get on another floor? Just some thoughts.

I did have the "trainer" all 3 days, when she wasn't pawning me off. I mean they were decent to me, but the last day I worked when my "trainer" threw me under the bus and claimed I didn't finished the charts on 2 patients when they were her patients that really p1ssed me off! and made me feel like a slacker which I am not.

Working with her I felt like I was slacking off she talked more then she worked and I had no other choice but follow her around.

I did mention to the lpn who also worked with us that I had no clue I was to chart on these people(since I worked with this lpn all morning) and she just blew me off. I really did try to correct the problem and I did what I was told and charted on these patients.

The manager called me back a few hours ago and basically said she couldn't switch shifts for me. She would like if I would come back and train with someone else. But still with my old "trainer". Thats fine and dandy but I am so nervous even paranoid to go back there.

The environment there is not the greatest with the lpns loosing their jobs.. I just don't know what to do.

I do have an interview next Tuesday somewhere else.

Hmmm...do you think there is any chance you will go back? I know I dont like confrontations with others, but maybe you can talk to your previous trainer, and explain how you felt...and see how it goes from there? So you will have a new trainer? Maybe it was just the person you were with, but there may be a tiny chance that there was just a misunderstanding. Is it hard to get into hospitals around your area? Where do you interview next week? I know some things can be very tough to decide. Im hoping I have a positive experience during orientation/when I start...the recruiter hasnt been the best. Good luck and keep us informed.

Jen, just wondering if you figured out what you want to do?

Jen did you take the other job, or did you work it out at the hospital? Im supossed to be starting on the floor this Monday! They completely screwed up the orientation schedule though, so will get some na orientation after I start..pointless?

Hi I haven't checked the boards for a few days, so Im just seeing your message.

I didnt go back to the hospital. I got called last monday for an interview at another local hospital but on their long term care unit.. Well today she left me a message on my voicemail saying that she had to cancel my interview because she was sick and didnt think she could make it through the day?? and that she will call me next week. ((rolls eyes))

3 weeks Ill have to wait for an interview, and she wasnt even sure when I spoke to her last monday if she even had a position available.(Since someone just quit and blah blah blah..)

She called me? and asked if I wanted to come in for an interview or if I wanted to wait until she knew she had an opening? I'm thinking well an "interview" then she will keep me in mind incase she has something and I can make an impression..

Otherwise I'm just going to keep looking.. Unfortunately there's not many more places for me to apply..

So I went to a nurse staffing agency today.. I will have to travel 40 minutes away from home but until I get something set in stone, fulltime-wise I guess I have no other choice. I will be getting paid $14-15 dollars an hour and paid weekly which is a plus.. Hopefully something good will come my way..and soon before I loss my mind.

I wish you luck on monday! Its a holiday will you get time in a half?? Not getting orientation prior to working personally gives me bad vibes from the get go.. Not knowing policy and procedures prior to working , thats scary.

Let me know how it goes!! The first day will be alot to take in im sure, it was for me.. What I should have brought in the first day, that I brought in the second day was a small notepad... That may help you remember everything that is thrown at you the first day..

Good LUCK!!!

Hey so what exactly does a nurse staffing agency do? Send you all over? Yet another change..the nurse manager called me late in the evening yesterday. She wanted to let me know not to show up for computer training today, like I was told. Now I go in tomorrow?! Yes like 5 different stories from 3 different people. She said she wasnt sure why there was all this confusion either...and to let me know it wasnt her fault (I never thought it was). So now she is supposed to be calling me back today sometime to let me know if I can even start on the floor Monday like I was supposed to (since I will have the NA orientation the 7th and 8th now ugh). Who ever is in charge of all of this really has screwed things up and is very aggravating!

Hospital interview tomorrow... If this Director of nursing cancels again its probably ment to be..Keeping my fingers crossed!!

I did all that paper work for like an hour for that nurse agency and the man who runs it said he would call me if something came available.. well he never called... But anyway this nursing agency sends you from what I gathered to ltc facilitys as staff relief. Friday I start orientation again at a ltc facility. I was called by 2 other hospitals as well 40-45 minutes away.. not sure about those.. All I know is I'm sick of getting 2 steps and doing orientations!!!!!!!!!!

Wow I would be peed-off too!!! Someone obviously isnt doing their jobs at that hospital.. Lack of communication seems to be the problem..

keep me updated on how it goes.. wish you luck!

Hey I wish you luck Jen. I started my training on the floor this past Monday. I was there four times this week. I think I might be with this one girl I have been with the 3 out of 4 days (shes okay, but something about her), and she said next time I will have to take care of half the patients by myself! I think its too soon!..not sure how it usually works. Im having a hard time remembering like a schedule of what to do and when, becasue it seems like we were always running all over. Also the charting. One day she didnt chart anythig so I could do it at the end of day (I was very overwhelmed and she had to end up finishing for me). If we have say 10 patients..Im having a hard time remembering who is who, what we did for them and what time. The charting system is confusing enough. Alot of the stuff I was thinking how the heck do you do this by yourself?! Also the input/output thing. The input is more confusing...the chart is not much help. I saw my share of gross things (gagged quite a few times)Theres alot more that I could probably mention. Its even harder since we didnt get our na orientation ahead of time. So this Monday I work at the hospital, Tues and Wed. go to this one place foe na orientation, fri, sAT, Sun. hospital. Also I am supossed to work every other weekend (theres a,b, and c weekends ) I forgot what I am off hand...but I think she has me following one of the people training me schedules, and when Im on my own I think the rotation is going to be messed up. One of the girls training me siad I seem nervous.
