Got Med/Surg position!

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

A hospital I had been waiting to hear back from, called today and offered me a position on either cardiac rehab unit,med/surg,another unit with infectious diseases?, or float.

While I was waiting to hear back from this hospital a big article was in the newspaper saying that the hospital will be "phasing out LPNs" 51 to be exact and will be hiring RNs and CNAs to fill their shoes.

Unless the LPN's would take a drop in pay and work at CNA wages, or further their learning and become RN's.

I feel nervous about starting there, Because it seems like there will be alot of VERY bitter nurses.

But I have bills to pay too..

Any case, I accepted the Med/Surg position on dayshift.

This is my first time working in a hospital. I have been a CNA for 14 years, but always worked in LTC, I decided I needed a change and applied at the Hospital.

Is any shift better to work on then others? These are 8 hour shifts btw.

My tentative start date is May 2.

Also What type of training/orientation do most hospitals offer for new employees?

Any help is appreciated :D

Everyplace I've worked, aides are trained by other aides. I've never seen an aide trained by an LPN.

Don't worry too much...while some nurses may be a little bitter about the changes, hopefully they will treat you professionally and not take it out on you. After all, YOU aren't the one who made these decisions, and a mature adult will be able to accept that.

Coincidentally my husband is hospitalized on the same floor I'll be working on. Which it was neat since I got to see how dayshift has been running. I told him not to tell them I will be starting.. The nurses that have been caring for my husband have complained and talked casual to both of us how the hospital is screwing them.. Which is weird they are so open with patients. But what upset me was that 3 different nurses came into his room and asked him and his roommate who is geriatric to sign their petition to save the LPNS. I feel for them, I do. But I think that is not very professional to be asking patients to sign petitions, when they are in the hospital ill. Just IMO.

Personally if I wasnt going to be starting there, I would have reported them. But I must keep my mouth shut.

When I asked the one nurse if anyone has been hired since this "phasing" has been going on , she said no, noone has been hired? So at this point Im thinking Oh s*** awkward!

She also started that you didnt have to be certified nursing assistant to work at the hospital in med/surg? News to me.

Yep, at our hospitals nearby, you only have to be a CNA to work on the skilled floor. The other floors will hire only nursing students or or people who have taken a PCT class they offer only a couple of times a year.

I'm finally starting May 2nd!!! Almost a month from when I was interviewed.

a week to check references

a week to be scheduled for a drug test @ the hospital & wait for FBI finger printing to come back

a week later to be scheduled for appt with employee health and complete a one step

FINALLY I START..I guess I expected to start work in like 2 weeks like you would with LTC...

:D

I graduated with a degree in medical assisting in December 2010. I applied like 2 weeks ago for a nursing assistant position and they called me the next day to set up an interview. I interviewed last Wednesday, and they called me this Wednesday with the offer. They said it is telemetry/MED SURG. Believe you will be doing something similiar. Not really familiar with those. I saw an ad up this past Sunday for the maternity department and applied but was afraid to mention it to the lady when she called..emailed her but no response. If you can tell me how it is because you will start before me. Also what did they offer you for pay? Are there benefits? I think I get benefits but since its part time right now I think it will be expensive. Others are discouraging me and saying that I wont be using my degree..but I dont know. I hope I get to use some of my skills. I have no nursing assistant experience. They were looking for someone with a h.s. diploma/ged. I dont know if they liked me and my degree had something to do with it, or they just hire anyone. I heard its usually hard to get into hospitals though. Its union and I dont know if its true but depending what unit your on the pay is different?! I have to go do this huge physical that will last a few hours may 10th and go back the 12th. Then orientation the 24th.

Specializes in CNA.

they are getting rid of LPN's everywhere... dont' feel bad. I work on a med surg floor now and love it!! you will do great!! take the med surg position. I wouldn't want to float, and ... infectious disease... I'm too paranoid for that!!! lol good luck!!!:heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat

Yesterday was my last day of orientation, and when we as a group took a walk through on the units where we will be working, the looks on the staffs faces were horrible.

The staff looked at the new hires as if we killed their dog or slept with their husbands. Seriously! I've been in nursing for a long time and I never felt like that before, where I broke out in hives and literally start having heart palpitations.

When we returned to the conference room with the Staff Development Rn we were with all day, I asked her how the staff's morale is over in the hospital.I said because it didn't seem as tho we had a warm welcome. She replied What kind of welcome were you expecting?

I said well maybe a smile, or smirk, something that kinda made you feel comfortable or you know greeted?

I wasn't expecting balloons and a cheering committee by any means. But I know in the past where I previously worked if someone new started I'd smile atleast or be somewhat friendly.

(in my first post in this thread the hospital is phasing out the LPNs and replacing them with RN's and Cna's)

I have never felt so disliked in the work place, before I even actually worked. I'm very in-tuned and pick stuff up on people's facial expressions, hand shakes things like that. It's a flaw of mine at times because I read into people and my first impression of people is what I normally keep.

I don't know what to do now. I let go 3 other jobs for this one. Ugh

Jenn hopefully they will be kind to you. Did you start working yet? I have to make a decision between 2 jobs by tomorrow and think Im going to take the NA position on the telemetry/med surg. floor at the hospital since its closer compared to the cardiology office for medical assisting. That is the main reason. What duties have you been doing? My sister was supposed to find out sooner, but she just did tonight...her friends mom works at the hospital as an RN , and if they told her mom the right floor she said she will be on the same floor as me?! I have never met her but she asked my sister my name...and said be willing to work and no whining. I think she said will "take care" of me though? Im pretty sure she said I wont be doing ekg's which I thought I would be doing. All my sister found out relating to duties is baths, vitals...and I dont know what else. So I am just wondering what else I will be doing. Im aggravated that the hospital hasnt explained anything really to me yet. I would appreciate it if you can maybe tell me what I may be doing.

Hopefully they'll warm up to you. Like you, I try to be friendly to new people. But, there is a big problem with this stuff at my workplace. We have so many new people start and quit before their training is even over (like, to the extent that they hire 2 people for every open position, and the extra one just goes PRN, because so many quit). Because of this, a lot of our nurses and aides don't bother to be friendly to new people or even learn their names until they see if they stick around. It's not right, but I guess I kind of understand it.

I start Monday, Although I really hoped to be starting this week. I guess I will just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best. The Unit manager called me to give me a start date today but other then that I have no clue when the heck I work, schedule wise. Plus in orientation girls had said they were on Rotation?? I'm thinking Wait *** is that?? Swing shifts? That was never discussed with me whatsoever. As I can only do dayshift not second shift. Anyway. I just hope all guess as expected :)

Ill keep you all posted..

Hey I posted this before, not sure if you got to read it...just please dont mind the questions you already answered. I know I am days with weekend/holiday rotation which means like every other weekend..so maybe thats what they meant. Jenn hopefully they will be kind to you. Did you start working yet? OH I know what you mean the hospital was more or less eager to pass along their mission rather then what the job was on the unit I would be one. Med/surg (the clean side).

Ill post after work monday and tell you what the routine was.

Thanks :)
