Got any funny acronyms at your ER???

Published

Ok...

So I am a part of a committee putting together a "seminar" targeting New Grads, Recent Grads and students.

We are tentatively calling it "REAL Life in the ER".

We are planning it from a humorous perspective.

I have the task of ED "Definitions"

You know...

"DDK"=Dead Doesn't Know it

"Code Brown"=No explanation needed...I hope!

Got it??!!??

So if anyone has some funny ones...please post them so I can include them in my "lecture"

Thanks!

:rotfl:

Also, any funny "Nurse Calls"

Specializes in NICU.

BTW, Paxilpenia is a recognized DRG.

SSRI withdrawl is AWFUL! I'm not in ANY WAY being a buzzkill, but IMO, it's a legit problem...the parasthesia, the nausea, the HA and anxiety...brrrrrr...

Wow, do you guys actually say these things, you should really listen to yourselves. Its disgusting the way you judge people and then make up little acronyms to be funny.

Very sad

Sometimes, when you have been around for awhile and have seen more horrible things happen than you could ever imagine, been cussed at, spit on, physically assaulted by patients/family members...you have to laugh or you would just cry. It's a stress reliever. It doesn't mean we hate people.

Amber you have much to learn and experience. Don't be so quick to judge. :o After a few years of experience you will probably find your self in the same positons as the rest of us, it's either laugh about it/them or scream or be charged with attempted murder. :rolleyes: You will eventually come to fully understand the true definition of stress: the uncontrollable need to choke the living S&%T out of some A&& Hole that desperately deserves it! :rotfl:

I do understand what you are saying. But imagine your father, your mother, your brother, your sister, your child and think about

how distressing it would be to know that the nurses are joking about things like:

ART: Assuming room temperature, as in dead.

DRT= dead right there

Coffin to bedside - Keep lid open!

I really dont see how these are funny, but maybe im looking at it a different way

Again iam only a student and havent yet been corrupted but whenever I look at a situation

I imagine how i would feel, react and want others to treat me.

Wheres the humanity?

For those of you that have missed this type of thread in the past, I have a pretty good list of these "acronyms and abbreviations", approx 14 pages worth....so if anyone wants a copy please let me know. :)

Cameron,

I would LOVE a copy to show my co-workers. Thank you

The Humanity is shown in how you treat your patient and the skill and care that you provide to them. Not in how you blow off steam in the break room or on your own time. When you begin to work with a lot of people you see, unfortunately a lot of stupidity. We have to laugh. Many people make mistakes or exercise bad judgement and get injured. We all do that! The ones who know better or who wantonly do the fantastically stupid are who we, and the darwin awards, make fun of. . .it is the act and the lack of two functioning brain cells that makes us nuts. What tears us up is the innocent who are harmed and killed by these fools. Now I'm getting angry trying to explain the stupidity so you might understand. It's get angry or laugh about it, it is healthier to laugh! As much as I might lilke to provide high dose slap therapy to the fools of our world I don't, I shake my head and laugh instead, AFTER they and thier victims are cared for. :sniff:

Exactly...that's what this board is for - to blow off steam. We wouldn't talk like this in front of patients or their families. It doesn't mean we don't care about some of these people. But you have to laugh to keep yourself from getting burned out. Humor is a VITAL part of keeping your soul alive. I wouldn't describe it as corrupted.

I would say especially for those of us who work ER/EMS sometimes - we see some truly horrible, awful stuff. Stuff that makes you not want to believe in the goodness of people. So you come here and vent, laugh, make crude jokes...whatever it takes.

For example...one night we had a toddler and parents hit by a drunk driver so hard that the toddler's skull was crushed. Not breathing on arrival...blue and bloody. Parents and drunk driver not injured. Baby died. We were all crying...it's times like that you have to find something to laugh about, or you wouldn't go back, or if you did you would have nothing left in you for anyone else.

Wheres the humanity in the patients that have hit, bitten, spit on, yelled out, and called be foul names? I have had all this happen and still gave the patient compent, caring treatment. Having special acronyms to describe some of these lovely people keeps me sane, and allows me to continue to be a damn fine nurse. You must have a sense of humor to survive the ER, it also helps to have a little life experience before your start critising others. When you've actually worked with the lovely John Q Public you may be singing a different tune. Some of the stuff we see will completely burn you out if you let it. The nurses that continue to be kind and careing have a great sense of humor - usually just a little warped - if you don't get it, I can only hope that someday, maybe after your have actually worked at the job, you will.
