got accepted !! ...now what??

I just got a letter that I was accepted to Helene Fuld School of Nursing in Camden County, to start Sept 2005. I am very excited, but sooooo scared too. I have a major issue of how I am going to pay for it.

How are the moms/dads with families out there doing it? I am seriously open for any suggestions. I am unfortunately one of those people who make too much to qualify for federal financial aid, like a Pell grant, but not enough to be able to afford it myself. I have 3 little ones ages 10, 5 and 2. DH works, but only average salary and I am a SAHM, but do work at home doing medical transcription, not really much income there, but helps with the bills.

So, my excitement is squashed a bit. I don't know if I will/should cough up the $200 to hold my seat in the program, since I have no CLUE, how I will pay for the 6 semesters, which adds to around $18,000 !!! Yikes...

I am sooo bummed.

Debra,

I will be going in the day as long as my babysitter can do those hours. If not, I'll be hiring a nanny. I have a 3yo and a 13mo. Should make studying interesting;)

I am in the same boat as you. I start the actual nursing classes in August 2005. I have been looking for scholarships everywhere. I only have a 3.7 GPA and I have only gotten a small scholarship from my school that will pay for my tuition only. But the books and extra stuff all adds up very quickly. However, I just filled out my FAFSA online a couple weeks ago and found out that I can qualify for some financial aide. So with my small scholarship and a little financial aide I am thinking we can make it without taking too much money out of our bank account. I also buy my books online at Amazon.com, ebay.com, and half.com to cut costs. Also, I have been getting little things as I go along like nursing shoes and stethoscope. That way I will not have to buy them all at once in August. Now I am looking for basic white scrubs/uniforms and a good watch:) I am slowly checking off some of the extra required things to help myself out. I suggest to look for any and all scholarships! Also fill out a free FAFSA on the internet and see what happens. Things are really tight around my house with me in school and not working but we make do and are happy. Congratulation on being accepted in school. That is a big battle in itself. Take care

Hi kimber3ks, First congratulations on your acceptance. That's wonderful! I know that it is a stretch, but I would make sure that you submit the $200 to hold your spot as you have no way of knowing what your financial situation will be in September. You would hate it if you were able to but didn't take the plunge now. You've got about 8 months to try different funding.

Keep in mind, that with 3 children along with your husband and yourself, you have at least five deductions...they go by your taxable income, not the gross income. I don't know what you mean by average job...but you may find yourself eligible for a pell. Also look into the different federal loans. Through the stafford loan itself you can get anywhere from $12,500 to $15,000. You'll have to pay it back, but I think it is worth it. There are many options...from scholarships to loans.

Good luck!

Kris
