Good reasons for re-taking a course. Any suggestions?

Published

I took a sociology class at a university, and passed it. I am now at a community college, and had to send in my prior transcripts. Due to this, the sociology class that I took at my previous university appears on the transcript of the community college that I'm going to now.

Well, since it appears on my transcript (as transfer units), I am not able to re-take it. That is why I am petitioning to re-take the course for next semester.

(I barely passed it, so I am not happy with the grade. Back then, I did not know that I would need this class for the future, since I took it just to fulfill a university requirement.)

It's very tough for petitions to be passed. I need very good and convincing reasons as to why I should be able to re-take this class, but all of my reasons involve me "maturing" (I took that course 4 years ago). I am not sure if this reason would be very convincing, since they usually want some sort of proof/documents attached. I would submit an application stating that the sociology class has to be no more than 5 years old, but all of the nursing schools that I have looked at only want the science courses to be recent. I also can't go to another community college due to monetary issues.

Any suggestions/advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! :)

Although the nursing programs only require science courses to be within five years, perhaps you could write about how you feel nursing is not only about science but also each persons psychosocial reaction to the disease process. Then explain how it would benefit you and your contributions to nursing school if you had a recent and thorough comprehension of the subject.

Or maybe you could givve an excuse as to why you did not do well the first time...

If your purpose is to learn the material, you can probably audit the class.

I would not stress out over this course nor take the time to repeat it. Science course grades are the ones that a nursing school admissions committee will have more interest in.

^Thanks for the replies all!

I would pay attention more to the science courses, but with the competitiveness these days, it's important to achieve all A's in all of the classes. This grade brings down my pre-req GPA by a lot, so that's why I am also stressing over it. Thanks for your comments though.

I personally wouldn't retake it. If you got a passing grade, why go through all the hassle. Just let it go. As long as it transfers to your degree, you should be ok.
