what is a good gpa?

Published

Im sure most of you have been asked this question plenty of times, but i need a straight up answer. right now im sitting with a overall GPA of a 3.7 but my prerequisite classes for the RN program tally up for a GPA of about 3.1-3.2 i just need a answer to what would would be a good safe zone to be in or even a zone for the alternative list that way i know where i stand. I know that that program is competitive, right now im attending HCC in tampa fl. right now i just feel extremely stressed out because i feel like this is putting me into a financial death trap, if i dont make it i have to retake classes to push that gpa and wait another semester just to reapply, while making a measly 7 dollars an hour. sorry if this is a long post, im a 19 year old male single parent trying to provide a better life for my daughter and all this stress is making me feel alot older than i actually am

Over a 3.5.

Unless it is from a community college, then I would expect at least a 3.8.

Let me just say that I got into nursing school with a 3.2 cumulative GPA (can't remember what my pre-req GPA was) and was 1 out of 75 students chosen out of 250. I did have to write an essay explaining my grades and why I had re-taken a class or two.

My story is here to tell you that it is possible to get into nursing school with a less than stellar GPA. It depends on what your school weights your admittance on. As for competitive school, I'd say at least a 3.5 is competitive. I know the average GPA for applying to my nursing school is a 3.5 and they don't accept much lower than a 3.0. Hope this helps & best of luck!

Your overall GPA looks promising. I'm sure you won't have many problems getting in! Keep your head up. I admire that you are pushing through the hard times/stress in your life and trying to become a nurse to provide for your young child. I wish you all the best! Good luck.

I have been accepted into NS for Fall 08 with a GPA of about 3.0
