Golden West College ADN Spring 2023

Updated:   Published

It seems like every cohort/application cycle has one of these pages. I wanted to start a new thread for the Spring 2023 cycle so we can keep each other updated during the application period and ask questions. Best wishes to everyone applying!

No problem! That varied. Those that were initially accepted had to submit an intent to enroll within a week or so of admissions emails going out (Oct 20th, the wait was painful), some didn't and basically gave up their seat. That was when the first alternates were given admission (late October). However I know alternates that got in during late November/early December.

This was answered better in the Fall 2022 forum, but off the top of my head:

Blood pressure, physical assessment, med administration: oral/PO, subq, IM; NG Tube insertion, and Foley Catheter.

I probably forgot 1 or 2 but that is essentially it.

For an example we're testing for blood pressure and the physical assessment on different days or on the same day?

My cohort was tested on different days for BP and PA. But I think I did Subq and IM same day. It might have been PO and Subq, I'm not sure. It was bit of a blur back then.

What was hard about the first semester?

A lot of things. Problem solving and solution process in Nursing is very different from my past experiences. Learning what needs to be prioritized and which intervention is most appropriate is not easy for me. Many questions and scenarios had solutions that were all correct, the question was which one was the most correct in this point of time with this patient.

Time management was key as well as self care/stress coping. You need to study and not stress. Problem is stressing makes studying hard because the desire to do well and the possibility of failure was strong.

Getting used to longer class time and clinical shifts was a little jarring, and the paperwork was a pain.

That said, the point of nursing school is to both expose you to the skills and mindset you will need to succeed in nursing, as well as the stressors that comes with nursing. So like all new things, it's a lot work.

The professors like really strict on the skills testing?

@Kenji12345

Thanks for being so helpful to us btw. I'm sure you have a lot on your plate RN, so thanks for carving out time to answer our qs!

No problem! Like  I said, feel free to ask me whatever questions you have and I will do my best to answer!

They aren't strict per se. It's just there are key points we need to always do to ensure patient safety. So if you get that wrong (ID patient, verify meds, hand hygiene, etc) then that is considered a fail.

What is the testing like? Is it on mannequins?

It depends. We were partnered with someone for BP and PA. All the others were mannequins or scenario oriented.

Btw, @Jacq if you have any more questions, do you mind asking them all at once rather than 1 at a time? I don't mind answering them, but it's a bit hard to keep coming back for one question at a time. Clearly you have multiple questions so just ask them all in one go.  Thanks!

I almost forgot. This Wednesday is Club Expo from 11 am - 2 pm on Campus. The CNSA will have a booth and there will be info and current Nursing students there. I will be there from 11 - 1, but there will be CNSA officers and members the entire time the expo is happening. Come one down and say hello or ask us a thousand questions about the program. We would love to see you there!

I only have one more question haha I didn't mean to make you upset Kenji, questions come up at different times. Do we have to join any clubs for credit or do extra stuff outside the nursing program for credit?
