Golden West College ADN Fall 2022

Updated:   Published

Hello everyone,

I am creating this forum so other pre-nursing students can gather and share helpful information regarding the application process, specifically for GWC's Fall 2022 entry. Some information I received by (staff removed name) (GWC counselor) today is that GWC's nursing program will accept the highest science grade regardless of repeats/remediation. I was worried because I took Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology all the way back in 2012-2013 when I was first starting college, and I failed a few times ? thankfully, previous failing grades will not impact your eligibility in receiving the highest points in the multi-criteria (just get those A's ?).

Additionally, she informed me that if science grades are older than the recency requirement (e.g. GWC has a 7 year recency), then schools will not consider these past grades (even if you failed, like in my case) in the application process.

This was a HUGE sigh of relief and hopefully it eases anyone else who might be in a similar situation.

p.s. (staff removed name) was referred to me by one of GWC's nursing professors. She did inform me that in the past, GWC used to average the science grades, but this is currently NOT the case (hopefully they don't change anything in the upcoming months).

Best of luck to anyone applying this cycle! ?

hi, can I ask how many points you had on your application?

Hi! I applied with 87 points, but that may have just been calculated wrong. They never did tell me how many points I ended up with.

Did they message you and tell you have been accepted yet?

I emailed them asking them to remove my application, since I will be attending another program.

Hello everyone!
I have recently accepted my position in the GWC nursing program and ecstatic to start ?. I was wondering if any nursing students currently in the program / alumni can respond to the following questions:

What advice would you give to new students entering the program?

What items / materials are considered your holy grail (must haves) that has made your life easier (or just benefitted you in general)?

Is there anything I can do prior to the program to better prepare myself?

thanks in advance!

Ahh, this is a new account I made to ask these specific questions -- so I am unable to reply to private conversations (15 post requirement). Those who messaged me have asked me how many points I had: 87.

That is to assume everything was calculated accurately, since the email did not state my actual points.

Specific stats:

-Full points for GPA & TEAS

-Additional points: language, direct patient care, bachelors, statistics

For anyone wondering if they have started accepting alternates - they have! I was accepted as alternate #5 (82 points - if calculated correctly).

If there is a FB group or discord for the upcoming Fall ‘22 Cohort, I would love to join! Looking forward to starting my nursing journey ?

Hi @lycheejelly,

?Let me start by first saying congrats!! I look forward to seeing ya this Fall. As for must haves or useful things:
1) You will be told to get a good stethoscope, I strongly recommend not getting top of the line. Most clinicals I got away with using a cheap one I got from my local pharmacy (I threw it away after certain... fluids got on there by accident and promptly bought a new one). The only time I used my Littman's was in the first few weeks while I was being evaluated by my professors for Blood Pressure, Physical Assessments, etc.

2) I got a foldable clipboard that I could fit it in my scrub pockets (there are big ones on the trousers for both genders) and an erasable pen that had 4 colors: Green, Red, Blue, Black (you'll learn how to use the colors later). Both are fairly easy to find on Amazon, Ebay, or what have you.

Some of my cohort swore by using a storage clipboard instead, so keep that in mind. We used them to hold and let us write on our clinical forms that were assigned to us from GWC. I didn't use the info so much that comes attached to the Nursing Version of a foldable clipboard, so if you have a tight budget any clipboard or foldable clipboard will do.

3) Some people used nursing handbooks and what have you, but between Youtube, open lab, and the material they gave us, I was more or less set. That said, I used a daily planner (paper version) to help me organize and set time for studying and keeping me aware of how close I was to certain deadlines or exams. So anything that helps you study, organize to study, or plan your time, get that.

4) I signed up for the Mentor Program with CNSA (California Nursing Student Association) which got me paired up with someone who was a semester ahead of me. It was a huge help to me and I strongly recommend you do the same even if you don't want to be part of the CNSA.

5) I would look up how to do Physical Assessments and start learning how to do Head to Toe on a 'patient' (you can use a friend or teddy bear with a t-shirt). It will make both doing it for your evaluation and in the clinical setting way easier if you got some practice in, and will be even better if you do it the same way so you don't forget anything regardless if you do a head to toe or begin with focus and move to head to toe. Look for ones that are Nursing and under 10 minutes. There are more thorough ones but you don't have to worry about that for 1st semester.

6) Once you have set up your FB account (Allnurses only allows us to post FB per the TOS) let me know and I will message you guys a few more things that are particular to GWC (Campus activities, resources, etc.)

Hope that helps and again congrats!!

Hi @Kenji12345,

I appreciate you so much & thank you for the thought-out and detailed reply! I will definitely start looking over the head-to-toe assessment and look into CNSA. Likewise, looking forward to putting a face to the username ? .
