Going for the RN...the untraditional way

Published

Life happens, but I've dealt with all that it's thrown at me. I've put off going back for my RN because every time I feel like I've gained some ground, something else happens. I'm not getting any younger, but my drive to get my RN is getting stronger. I realize that going the traditional route is not going to do since I am the main provider for my family. I have made the decision to go through ISU and would like to connect with other students who are also going through the LPN to BSN online journey. I know this isn't going to be easy, but I believe it's going to be so very worth it in the end.

Good Luck on your journey. I am an RN already, but started back to school for my BSN. It is currently on hold due to my current job--no time at all and my extra money going towards my son--unemployed at present due to economy). Get started and keep at it til you reach your goal. You can do it!

Hello there....First off Congrats for going back!!!!! Itook the scenic route also. Completed my LPN-ADN last year in May and have worked as a RN a litte over a year now.

Now I am thinking about going back to get my BSN.The hardest thing for me is trying the funds for my education.Don't let anything stop you .GOOD LUCK on your Journey.

thank you everyone! i just finished requesting my transcripts to be sent to exclesior. i'm hoping for good news in regards to my micro class. :/ if they don't take the credit then i will test out on it. i'm nervous! my biggest fear is failing but i don't want to say i didn't try:)

CONGRATS!!!!!! As you have taken the bold step i've been putting asside for YEARS.. I've finally decide to do for it but strictly online. I heard of excelsior college but I'm kinda puzzling about the self pace thing. ANYONE with ideas of online schools for lpn to RN? or how the excelsior program works. HELP pls it's a 2013 plans.

I did a traditional butt in the seat program for LPN, then went with Excelsior for LPN-RN. Now I am going with TESC RN-BSN.....a very scenic route for myself as well.

The one thing you need to know about excelsior is make sure they are approved by your board of nursing AND stay away from the College Network.

OP, I'm in the same boat. I've always wanted to be an RN, but several roadblocks kept me from doing it. ("You have a 2-3 year waiting list? And your cohorts only start every other year?? No, I don't want to be added to your mailing list.") My favorite was the school that looked over all my transcripts, then told me that in addition to retaking anatomy (which I aced a few years prior) I would also have to take the basic reading comprehension test, which of course costs even more money. You have my transcripts there, right? See the section that says I have a masters degree in education with a 4.0 GPA? Yeah - reading comprehension isn't an issue for me, so I'm not paying to take the test just to get on YOUR waiting list.

Finally I decided to start checking out LPN programs. My rationale being, if I have to wait 2-3 years before I can get into an RN program, I might as well do SOMETHING. Then I can work as a nurse while I go back to school for my RN. I finished my LPN program back in July, and I started running into the same issues as before when I looked at RN programs. Outrageously long waiting lists, unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. Daytime-only programs. Sorry, I work for a living. No, I won't quit my job to go to school - I'm single. How do you think I'm paying for school? How can I log in to check e-mails and submit assignments if I'm broke, living in a refrigerator box under a highway overpass? How about offering some online classes, evening/weekend clinicals, something like that? Nope, they don't do that.

I was so glad to find ISU's LPN-to-BSN program. Still lots of hoops to jump through and a little on the expensive side, but online classes and local clinicals arranged at my convenience? Sign me up. I'll get my RN license without actually attending an RN program, and finish with a BSN as well. I start my first semester next week, and I'm very excited!
