going to Mercy School of Nursing?

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi there,

I am starting mercy School of nursing next week (yipes!) and am very excited and very nervous - - anyone out there starting May 2008 or anyone in the program now? Would love to hear from you!! :typing

Hey! I start Mercy this fall! How has it been!? Is it everything that you hoped for!?

I'm applying there for Fall 09, How is the admission process? Please tell all.

Mercy is wonderful - staff, facility, experience so far is great. They truly want you to succeed.

It is a LOT of work - unlike any other schooling you have ever had before. I was told this but didn't really understand it until I was there :)

Admissions are tough - about 350 applied for my class and 30 were accepted. Tip: get as many of the prereqs out of the way as possible so you can focus on nursing courses...

Good luck! And feel free to post other questions

I start this Fall as well...I'm wrapping up my last pre-req this semester (A&P II). I didn't realize there were so many applicants...makes me feel even better about getting accepted!

It's also great to see there's at least one other person my age in the program! (I'm 41 too OakIsland)

I look forward to seeing you in a couple of months!

Matt

Hi Matt

I actually started this May. It's great - - A LOT of work so be ready. There are a handful of folks older than us, so I am sure there will be in your class as well!!

See you in the Fall.

I just graduated from Mercy and am currently studying for NCLEX (July 1- eeeek!!) I have only good things to say about the staff and curriculum at this school. I have a degree from a 4 year university so I thought...how hard could this be? Never had I ever been so wrong. It was soooo hard. From day 1 to the last day- I never studied more in my life. So far all the girls I've talked to have passed NCLEX, though and I am one of the last ones to take it. We finished with only 18 people though so be aware that you will lose people. If I could give you any advice it would be to get to know your instructors- they are there to help you. If you get a bad grade on a test- go find out what you did wrong and remediate. Otherwise-the same problem will keep coming up on other types of questions. If you don't understand a skill- visit the librarian- she is wonderful and will help you with clinical skills. Also don't be intimidated by other people in your class with more healthcare experience- you deserve to be there just as much as the next person. Lastly-get to to know the people in your class. You may not get along with everyone but you will definitely form some lasting friendships because of the experiences you will share together. Please let me know if you have any questions now or in the future- good luck!!!!

I'm ready...can't wait to get started.

Couple of questions...I have all my general college courses out of the way, so I'll just need to take nursing courses. I'm planning to apply for the accelerated program...is that insane?

Also, I'm thinking about getting a laptop. Is it beneficial to have one?

Thanks for your advice!

Matt

Honestly- the accelerated program is somewhat insane. As you know- it takes 5 semesters and puts it into 4. Also you are split up during your courses and taking say Critical Care with Maternity or Mental Health with Med Surg. To split it up like that you spend some of your clinical and classroom time with an upper class. Also, the few breaks we get between semesters or for holidays you will be in clinical for some if not all of that time. The instructor that runs the program is wonderful though , so that helps. I would see how Fundamentals goes for you. If you are able to maintain a B average in that class with no problem that you should be fine. All of the lectures and notes for the all the classes are on powerpoint notes that we write on. A laptop may be helpful but would not be necessary- depends on what you would be using it for. They do have access to computers with internet in the library though.

Fitnessangel25- I have a few questions for you. I recently applied to Mercy for Summer 2009. I too have a BS degree from another university. I am currently finishing my pre-recs and will only have nursing courses to take if I am admitted. However, I am concerned about the admission process as I know it is very competitive. I have a BS in engineering but only graduated with a 3.2. I have not completed A&P, Psych or Micro... I will be taking these courses in the coming fall and spring semesters. Do you think I have a shot at getting in?

It sounds like you do- we had quite a few people (myself included) who still had to take micro and/or psyc while we were at mercy So if you will have all of them finished then that would definitely help you. Just make sure you keep updating your application so admissions knows that you have completed these courses. I'm not exactly sure how the process works but I know that they do take into account students with previous degrees. Good luck to you!

I was freaking out earlier in the year. I was attending UNCC in attempts to get my second degree in nursing. I also applied to Mercy. I was really upset when I was wait listed at UNCC and at Mercy. I had completed all pre-req's and sent Mercy my updated information. I just found out three weeks ago I got accepted to Mercy. So, I will begin in Fall of 2008.

I have a 3.68 in pre-req's, but my first B.S. degree gpa was hurting me. So, I am really lucky to be starting at Mercy. If your interested go and google the north carolina board of nursing, check out the education section and look at the five year pass rate, Mercy has an outstanding record. They have a higher % of pass rate than most University and community college programs.

Good luck everyone!!!
