I just started at SJSU about two months ago, and I'm taking a human anatomy class, general psychology, english 1a, and intro to chem. I have a vague idea of what I'm taking next semester, but after that, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. How do I get into a nursing program? When do I do it? I know my major is "nursing," but how do I go about making sure I graduate? What is my degree in? My brother recently had to go to the pediatric ICU and was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, and after watching all the nurses help him, I just KNEW I'd love to work in the pedi ICU. How do I get there? It sounds stupid, but I'm pretty lost, but I have the heart and determination to get there. If you can help me in ANY way and give me some direction I would appreciate it a lot. After telling people I want to be an RN, I'd like to be able to explain my plan of education in detail instead of replying with, "Um...I actually don't know." It's pretty embarrassing. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

welcome, and it sounds like your on the right track. Since SJSU has a nursing program, I would check out the website and would talk to an advisor, they can map out a plan of action as far as the courses you have to take. Since every school is requires different pre reqs thats your best bet.
So check with the school so you know that your not wasting any time by taking classes that aren't required. Good luck!

Hello...the best thing is to talk to your college and set up an appointment with a counselor...they are great and will point you in the right direction....detail for detail. Good luck!

- Follow the advice of the previous posters.
- In addition, start contacting nursing schools. Most have pre-admission conferences (last 1 or 2 hours) where they address the exact questions you are asking.
- At these conferences - make sure to get phone number/etc. Would not hurt to shake a hand or two. Also, talk to folks in student lounge after the conference. Hoefully, you will learn their fears and their mistakes. Best thing that could happen - you get to go to lunch with 2 or 3 folks that are in the same position you are. Now you can do "networking" and also "pick a few brains".

Hey girl...
Go to the Health Building and go upstairs to room 420. This is the nursing office. They can give you a yellow packet with the requirements for the nursing program. Or better yet, go to http://www.sjsu.edu and find it thru the school of nursing homepage. It's all there. The pre-reqs are long but its all worth it. In your anatomy and chem classes there are most likely other nursing students in there.. ask them about what to do. I transferred in so I don't know if it's the same for people who start out there. I don't know if there is a current waiting list but as soon as you finish the pre-reqs you should be able to start the program. Take advantage of your summer vacations and winter sessions and get your lower and upper GE out of the way. It sucks taking them along with nursing classes. So off the top of my head, classes you need are:
Bio
Chem
Organic Chem
Elem. Statistics
Sociology
Psychology
Nufs 8
CHAD 67
Micro 20
Comm 20
Eng 1A & 1B
So yeah, these along with your GE's.
The school of nursing has about 3 general advisement meetings every semester. You can attend one now.. Good luck!

This must be so exciting for you!
I remember when I was in your position. I spoke to a nursing advisor and she helped me get everything ready for when I applied. Now I am just a few months from graduation.
Work hard and keep focused on your goal.
