GMU Traditional 2017

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi,

I decided to make this post for anyone who has applied to George Mason's Traditional Nursing Program 2017. What did you think of the application process? Essay? Video?

And I can't wait until April!

I'll definitely be taking out student loans, trying to get some scholarships, and working part time. Mostly weekends.

I am currently working just every other weekend and work study. I will continue to work the weekends, but I won't be able to do work study at Mason because of the schedule of classes. I am planning on not taking out loans because federal and state grants help cover most of my tuition, I will just have to pay the remaining balance. I think you should work only if you really have to because nursing school is stressful and it would be a lot more beneficial if you spend more time studying and really focused on your school work. But again there are always students who do work and are able to complete the program. It all depends on your capabilities.

And it doesnt hurt to talk to your professor. Sometimes they are more understanding than you think. Explain how you were just accepted into the program and passing the class is mandatory to continue. Explain how much it means to you. Maybe she can offer some extra credit and you should definetly study for the last exam.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I ended up meeting with my teacher and she is allowing me to retake the missed exam, though I'll only get partial credit. It's better than nothing and should bump up my grade quite a bit. Unfortunately she doesn't offer extra credit but it's fine...I'll just need to study constantly until exam time.

I've managed to work full-time (usually 45 hours per week) while in school full-time because I don't really have any help and didn't get much financial aid. It was tough and I had no life, but luckily I've taken my courses online during the last 2 semesters so that's allowed a lot of flexibility. I'm aware Nursing school is going to be much more rigorous and will require a lot more than what was expected during pre reqs at NVCC so I'm going to try to work weekends or every other weekend. It's not like i'm making a lot at my job so loans may be the way to go. I'm really worried about what I'm going to do as far as money for my car, health insurance, etc. and wonder whether I can take out loans to cover that as well. I'm planning on moving in w/ parents who live in Arlington for at least my first year to eliminate rent payment. We'll see how it goes! I'm optimistic about this though.

The amount of federal (unsub & sub) student loans they offered me didn't even cover tuition. Are you getting a private loan? I know nothing about private loans, but that may be my only option. I need to get more serious in my scholarship search as well.

There are so many scholarships for nursing students. Just apply to as many as possible.

There are many scholarships but most of them either the deadline has passed or they require you to at least havecompleted one semester of nursing school, well at least the ones I have been able to find. For next semester, there might be more scholarships available for us. I will also be working as much as possible during this summer to save up at least something because there are so many fees aside from tuition.

Hello, I currently got my letter and I am waitlisted. This is giving me such anxiety. Mason is the only school I applied to since it is the only school I can afford without having to move. I was wondering if anyone else is waitlisted, and for those of you who got accepted, is anyone considering Mason as a second option?

Yeah..all the scholarships I've applied to so far haven't been nursing related because I was worried that I wouldn't get in. I will still look around but otherwise I'll make sure to apply for the next school year. I'm also going to be working as much as possible once school ends in a couple of weeks, like 50ish hours a week through mid-August at my current job in order to save. I'm fortunate to have this option because we recently had somebody quit and we have somebody going on maternity leave in May so we are going to be severely short-staffed. I'm basically going to live at work!

Hello,

Mason was the only school that I applied to as well. I'm going to accept the offer assuming all goes well with my current Microbio course grade. However, a couple of students in my Microbio and Biomedical Ethics courses have gotten acceptance to multiple schools and are currently undecided. I know that one of them will likely be declining her GMU offer and accepting an offer from a school in her home state so that she can live with parents.
