GMU 2nd Degree Accelerated Program--Admissions info

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi all,

Can any past applicants or current or recent attendees of GMU's 2nd degree accelerated program give me any information about admissions. The program staff have told me that it is very competitive, but I'm still wondering exactly what that means--what GPA's get accepted (and are those GPA's for the nursing pre-reqs only or for the entire prior bachelor's degree), do they value and consider prior work experience, etc...? If there are any current or recent past students out there, please let me know about the program, as well. How are faculty and administrators? How many hours are you in clinical each week and attending classroom courses each week? Also, how many hours are you dedicating to studying outside of school each week?

One final question (I know I've already asked a ton!): Applications are due in March...when did you get notified of their decision? Early June or late June? Thanks!

I have a prior degree with a GPA of 2.99. I was accepted in the GMU's 2nd degree program for nursing. However, I still had prereq to take. The pre-req classes I needed were full at GMU and my advisor told me to see if I can take the class at NOVA and then transfer it to GMU. Well, that's when I found NOVA has a nursing program. NOVA is much cheaper than GMU especially for a pre-req class. I also found out that to be an RN one only needs an associate degree in nursing and many hospitals or facilities have tuition programs to help pay for nurses to obtain their BSN/MSN. Needless to say, I registered for NOVA to take my pre-req and now in NOVA's nursing program. Have also learned NOVA has a higher NCLEX pass rate than GMU students and NOVA students get more clinical time. You might be surprised at the number of 2nd degree students at NOVA, we are many!! :)

I applied to the accelerated program for Fall 2008 and I got in but decided to do the traditional program instead for many reasons (one being that I can’t fathom cramming two years of nursing school into one year). The program is very competitive because a lot of people apply for only 70-80 spots. When you get your application you’ll see this breakdown: the essay is 55 points, science pre-reqs are 20 points, 1st degree GPA is 15 points, non-science pre-reqs are 5 points, and your resume is 5 points. That’s what you’re going to be evaluated on. It says that each application will be scored twice and the two scores will be combined for a total score. Applicants will be ranked by total score in descending order.

I’ve heard from people that the program is good….people do make it through lol. They’re on campus/at clinical pretty much all day five days a week ( I was told that by Leigh Ellen). The first semester is 21 credits I think so yeah school will be your life( as it is with any nursing program but even more so)Yes applications are due in March and I found out during the second week of June. The waiting is the worst part, good luck with applying.
