GMU accelerated BSN Fall 2015

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I am applying to the Fall 2015 program, I know the program is really competetive so I wanted get an idea of what kinds of grades/ scores of others applying. I currently have an overall GPA of 3.3 and a prereq GPA of 3.6. I haven't taken my Hesi-A2 exam yet, but will be taking it tomorrow. I plan on applying to a few other schools as well. How did everyone score on their Hesi exam?

Hey, yeah I only made it because I couldn't find one already made. it's here:

The group is closed (anyone can find it, but only members can see posts. send me your link) mabye I'll try making it public

Looks like you just made it public! I would think it would show up if Closed as long as it wasn't Private. Especially as you can provide a link. Anyway, My name is Sarah, and I just joined :)

I'm a fan of the face space - seems an easier way to communicate than in this forum.

Thank you so much for all the good information deej394! I have a couple of questions, if you didn't mind answering some more. I noticed that there was a technology fee included in the listed costs. Do they happen to supply a computer/laptop/notebook of some kind for us to use while in school? For the mandatory Mason transfer orientation, they list registering for classes as part of the schedule. As nursing students, do we get a "rough schedule" at that time? I know you said schedules tend to change frequently. Does our tuition automatically include access to any sort of gym on campus? Lastly, as far as scrubs are concerned, do we have the option to buy them from anywhere we choose, as long as they are the correct color, or is there a specific brand/site that we must use? Thank you so much for helping enlighten the next class. Your feedback is much appreciated!

Hi lightofmylife,

No problem providing info. I don't mind at all, and it would have been so helpful last year to have this. So I only hope it makes things a little easier for you!

There are actually a lot of fees. For example, our summer tuition is $5091, but between a CHHS fee, and other fees, it's actually $5,866. The same type of thing happened every semester with the most significant jump the first semester. Any technology fees do not give you a laptop. You will need one though. You do, however have access to a gym on both Fairfax and Prince William campuses. I don't know about Arlington because I've never been to that campus. The gym at Prince William is very nice; it's the Freedom Aquatic/Fitness center and is well equipped and has lots of classes.

As far as the transfer night, you may have to go, but it is not oriented toward anyone in our program and very little information is given out. For most of the classes, there is only one option, with everyone being in the same lecture hall, and since they accept 48 people (I think) they always have at least that much space between all of the labs/clinicals. The only say you get in clinicals is letting the woman who coordinates them know if you live in a different place than your mailing address so she can place you (possibly) a little closer. If I remember correctly they check that you have properly registered for everything before you leave the orientation. I would recommend going to one of the evening orientations, as they are quicker and the daytime ones are more geared toward "regular" undergraduates.

I think I talked about it in another post, but the schedule isn't too bad. I think that they're changing the set up for you guys though because of complaints from us. We had 2 classes for seven weeks, then 2 other classes for seven weeks with clinical and lab the whole 14 weeks. If it's anything like ours you'll find that a lot of the classes (not specifically first semester, but in general) could be online and they weren't. I don't know what that's about, but its a pretty annoying thing to deal with. Overall, the schedule has been manageable.

Actually, I think we talked that night a little about certified profile, a little about classes and about "boot camp" which really shouldn't be called boot camp, its really just an orientation that's specific to the nursing school. If you hear this word being thrown around, don't be scared, but do be aware that it starts a week before general classes for the school. So if you're planning any trips, you should be back then.

For scrubs, you can buy any brand that is the correct color. Don't trust me on this but I think the colors you need are a hunter green top, an apple red top and khaki color pants, but they should be scrub pants, not dress pants. These are a little harder to find and I actually tried some on in a store and bought them on Amazon because they had the color and they were cheaper! They're not super strict on the color of khaki, so if it's tan or khaki or any other color in that family, they should be fine.

If anyone has more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I will answer when I see the post. I check here periodically.

Congratulations to everyone who has gotten in and good luck to those waitlisted!

There is a Uniform City in Fairfax Circle and at Potomac Mills, so there are places in the area to shop for uniforms. I went today to start checking out shoes - so many options, and I didn't like most of them!

Ugh I am not looking forward to the shoes...they're all so ugly. Also, check out pulseuniform.com, they've got pretty cheap scrubs in a variety of styles and colors etc.

@deej394, thank you for all of the information you've provided, you've been EXTREMELY helpful and it helped me make up my mind between schools. Are most people in your class commuting from closeby like Fairfax/Manassas. I live in Arlington and plan on staying there throughout the program but I think it'll be a manageable commute. I'd just like to know if there are some people doing the same thing and it's not killing them. Thanks!

I kind of like the Timberland Renova Pro, and I've read great reviews on it - just need to find it in stock somewhere so that I can try it on! I tried on a bunch of the cushioned nursing shoes today, and I did not like them - all that cushioning makes me feel unstable!

Hi Morjayne4-

I wouldn't move. I really don't think there's a place that "most people" are commuting from. People are all over the place and make it work. There's some people in Arlington, some in DC, some in Leesburg, Reston, Centreville, Clifton, and Quantico. There is even someone who lives in Lovettsville. So really ALL over. I actually don't think there are too many in Fairfax or Manassas. And from Arlington you'll be against traffic on 66 which helps a lot. For me, it takes about 40 minutes to get to the Manassas campus, which can be tedious, but even that's fine when you get used to it.

Hi deej394,

Thank you for all the great information! I know you mentioned before that you don't know your schedule until last minute, but when were you able to register for classes for the fall semester? Thank you again!

Thank you for all the great information @deej394. Before heading to the nursing orientation, I wanted to look into the fall semester classes. Are the classes for fall NURS 305, 309, 310, 334, 419, and 425 ? It would be great to know and prep my brain to start studying again! Thank you so much!

Hi mnm1018

I'm pretty sure we registered for fall classes during our summer orientation. I recommend doing the evening one as it seems like the daytime one is geared toward regular undergraduate transfer students.
