Getting ready to apply: CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2013

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

Good morning!

I am a current LPN working on pre-requisites for application to the CCC-NP for Fall 2013!

I'm taking most of my courses at Holyoke Community College and hope to transfer to Northwestern Connecticut Community College.

So far I have completed:

Nutrition 101- A

English Comp and Lit (6 credit course)- A

Biology w/ Lab- A

Math 085- A

This summer I am taking:

Intro to Psych

Math 095

This fall I am taking:A&P I

Chemistry

Computer Apps

Human Development

During the winter intersession I will take:Sociology

Spring 2013:

A&P II

Statistics

Microbiology

Public Speaking

On my list of things to do:

-Attend Nursing Information Session

-Take TEAS-V

I plan to continue after my ASN to my BSN from Elms College so I'm working on required courses for that program as well.

I look forward to getting to know others who are going through the process! Enjoy the day!

That's the Spring semester. I could switch it up but I still won't finish those courses until after the application deadline.

The Stats and Public Speaking are for the eventual BSN. I have to be careful to maintain full-time status for financial aid as well.

Right, I read the booklet and emailed for clarification of what I had already taken and what was still needed to be completed. He left out all of the core courses that need to be completed by LPN applicants PRIOR to application.

"Complete the required general education courses of the first year of the CT-CCNP with a grade of C or higher (BIO*235, PSY*111, PSY*201 & SOC*101)."

I knew I needed to have them done prior to the start of the third semester which is why I thought taking them in the Intercession and Spring would be sufficient. I didn't realize I needed them prior to application.

This makes it sounds like *after* you are accepted (admitted) they had to be done before starting the third semester:

"Once admitted, LPN candidates will be advised as to their placement within the CT-CCNP. For an LPN to begin the program in the third semester, the following requirements must be met:

Complete the required general education courses of the first year of the CT-CCNP with a grade of C or higher (BIO*235, PSY*111, PSY*201 & SOC*101).

Successfully complete the Connecticut LPN Transition Bridge Course at Charter Oak State College (COSC 190) and the college based CT-CCNP LPN transition course (NUR*130). "

Am I misunderstanding this?

I dont' know..it is ambiguious..can be read either way. My best suggestion to get a 100% positive answer..call the number they give listed in that book for the NWCC program director and ask him/her. They would be better to tell you how its done.

You know I'm going with the thought that you CAN apply with that first list of required stuff (the req classes all applicants have to meet). Then once accepted you won't be able to take the LPN to RN transitional classes until you do the first year non-nursing classes. Once you do the 1st yr non-nursing AND the transitional classes you then will be admitted into the 3rd semester nursing classes.

Been trying to post but the formatting on this thing stinks and there is no "undo" button for my errors. Anyway, what I get from the information given is that I am ok for application with the exception of the Statistics class. I can switch it out for Algebra if they want, but I still won't be able to complete it before the Feb 1st deadline.

LOL Now that we've established that, I need a Plan B. Plan A is not going to work.

:)

Thanks Pixie! I'm going with you on this one. :lol2:

I already emailed the Director but she is out until the 5th. I will get an officially official answer then. :w00t:

I can always try to test out of Math with the Accuplacer I suppose. I don't want to bet the farm on that though!! LOL

I'm applying for NCC's nursing program in November. I'm going to be taking A&P 1 in the fall for the second time. The first time I dropped it because I had a D+ average and I was also taking 4 other classes. So this fall I'm just taking A&P 1 and Math 136.

My gpa is a 2.4, so I'm hoping I can raise my gpa this fall. If I don't, then I can't apply and I'll have to wait for 2014 .

Complete the required general education courses of the first year of the CT-CCNP with a grade of C or higher (BIO*235, PSY*111, PSY*201 & SOC*101)."

Yes, you need everything done just like you are applying for the regular RN program. They then just start you two semesters later.

I got an email back from the Director of the Program. She said my Stats would be fine but that it needs to be completed before the Feb 1st deadline. She also said I didn't need the Human Development for application, I just need it to be completed before starting 3rd semester for the bridge. So, I will take Stats in the Fall and Human Development in the Spring and am now back on schedule. I think. :lol2:

Hey HelenaHandbasket! I just read your question and wanted to suggest something. Have you ever heard about the CLEP exam??? look it up! there are some classes that you can test out and get college credits for it! I'm interested in taking the College Algebra Test, instead of taking the class! It costs only about $95 at Naugatuck Valley community college (that's where I"m starting nursing school this fall). it's a great idea! NVCC accepts up to 6 credits that you can test out, and you would get 3 credits for the College Algebra Test. So...if you're good enough to pass the test, do that instead of taking the college algebra class, that way you're not late with the math class for applying in february. and you can still take statistics later on! good luck an please let me know what you decide to do! just go on the NVCC (or any CT comunity colleges and type CLEP exam in the search box. it should show up).

hi, was hoping to apply for the 2013 program had a couple pre-req still needing to be finish. curious on how the process was in transitioning classes from another degree program? i understand sciences classes have a six year window. i heard however, can be difficult in regards to other classes as well. for instance intro to psychology course heard they challenged someone who had a masters in psychology from a state college in the area. i figure knock out all the classes need done and then apply for the program see what happens. best of luck

Chemistry is a co-req to A&P I, which means it can be taken before, or with A&P I, but must be completed at the same time.

Hi CT Pixie - Where did you take Microbiology? I'm looking to take Microbio during Winter Intersession.
