Hi,
I'm new to this site and I have been reading all the posts with lots of interest! I'm currently a nursing student in the UK, i'm doing an accellerated nursing diploma (2 years 2 months) - adult branch. With the current jobs situation in the UK, i've started to look into what my options are...
I qualify in September and I would really like to get a job somewhere, anywhere! I've got dual nationality and have a New Zealand passport, however I think I would prefer to work in Australia rather than New Zealand; does anyone know what the situation is with newly qualified UK nurses going over to Australia? Will having done the accellerated diploma be acceptable? Also will having a kiwi passport mean that it is better not to go through an agency? Is there anyone in a similar situation?
Finally, I would like to work in the US one day and I am worried that I will never be able to have my qualification recognised as it is a shorter course, it is specialised and I don't think the insight experiences into the other branches add up to enough hours. Any advice on that?
Thank you for reading this far!!

Hi and welcome to the site.
The only way to say whether your programme will be accepted in Australia is to apply once you have qualified. Regarding the US you will probably have a problem as not always obtain enough hours both practical as well as theory in all areas ie mental health, midwifery and paeds. You can take course to make up your hours but must be with an accredited school of nursing and currently in the UK there is no where to make up these hours but I do believe there is a place in Australia where you can make these hours. Best check out the Australian and International forum and you should find plenty of info there

If you are currently in a program, try to make up the hours in your rotations that you can select, your electives. Some have been able to do this and have not had a problem. The issue is that you need to have hours in pediatrics, as well as maternal health, and mental health. Both clinical, as well as theory hours.
There are programs available in the US to make up these hours but best bet is to try and do them before you graduate if it all possible.

Hi, some hospitals in oz have a graduate nurse program. you can go over as a new graduate and you do 12-18 months rotation and your preceptorship.
