getting into BSN nursing program

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a almost 38 year old mom of 4. I have an BS in Elementary Education but my freshmen year of college (almost 20 years ago!) I had way to much fun and had a horrible GPA. I went on to get decent grades but as you know it is very difficult to bring up a low GPA! I have a cum. GPA of 2.8. I decided last fall that I would like to go to nuring school (I have been at home raising my kids for 15 years) I am attending a community college for the first time this semester and taking 13 hours... all prereq's. I will get all A's. I need 2 more semesters of pereq's but when I have to apply My GPA will only be up to about a 2.9. 3.0 after the fall semester when I send my transcripts. I have lots of other things going my way. I was a La Leache League Leader for 8 years. I have been on my children's school council for 4 years, been in a leadership role on our school auction for 2 years. I am planning on helping out at our local free clinic this summer with a CNM that is the head of the CNM program at the nursing school that I would like to attend. (planning on asking her for a letter of rec.) What are my chances in the highly sought after spots in a BSN school!?? I feel like my life experiences will help me and if they see that my school work now is way different than 20 years ago! will they overlook my GPA. (it is over the required GPA) Thanks in advance!

Please don't saddle yourself with trying to do the math on a "lifetime" GPA. Schools of nursing do not look at it that way. You got a degree and have done very well with the pre-reqs. They absolutely separate out current work from historic achievement.

Have you thought about an acccelerated second degree program? They are busy but faster.

I'm a second degree BSN from 21 years ago. You can do it. Your past GPA shouldn't be too much of a factor.

Actually I have. There is one in my area BUT you have to take 15 hours there before you can be accepted and it is a VERY expensive priviate collage. I also worry about the work load as I have 4 children ages 7-14. I am planning on going down to speak with them though. Thanks for your imput! I hope your right!
