do you get to choose your specialty

Published

Does anyone know if one is joining the Nursing Corp, Air Force in particular, do you get to choose your specialty? For example if you already have experience as a civilian RN do they automatically put you where you have already been working? Or do you get to change if you want to? I know they give credit for experience but what about if you are now in a new career field do you still get the credit? If anyone knows the answer it would be appreciated. Thanks. Pam

My reply would only be regards to ANC, so email me if want such info ;)

I talked to an Advisor today and he said the only way you can get a specialty other than med-surg is to have a certification in that specialty as well as experience. Does anybody know about this? I am not sure I believe him because he also said the only people who get sign on bonuses are combat related and that I know for sure is not true. If anybody has any input or advice it is appreciated. Thank you.

Hello NursePamela,

My Army Nurse corps recruiter has told me a couple of straight faced zingers! Hooboy! I guess he must not realize that as health care workers we are actually pretty good at discerning XXXX Ha!

So, mine has wasted so much of my time with the telling me hogwash and then claiming ignorant when I call him on it that its absurd. Puhlease. He is about to retire with his 20 in so, unless he is just "touched" I don't believe his act at all.

If yours is telling you nonsense ask to double check with another recruiter or the recruiter who is going to handle your application packet once your current recruiter passes it along.

I read today on the Meps medcom website that after our final Mep exam when we take our oath we get to fully review our service contract, if there is anything wrong then of course that is the time to really fix it, before we sign! I'd check into the bonus refusal of course right away.

Ugh, the junk mine is telling me, what a spin. You think he'd just relax and help me negotiate, however all they care about is diminishing the amount of work they need to do in order to complete your packet, including telling me to lie by omission!!

What zingers has the AHC Recruiter told you, LOL?

Hello,

First note, thank you to admin for clearing up my foul language, I will watch it!!

I will list some of his zingers.

1. that the Army will ship me off as enlisted right away if I go via Army nurse candidate program and do not pass my nclex on the first try

2. that I would be better served by commisioning right now because he says my program is recognized, yet, I am not a nurse yet and have no pre-qualifying baccelaureate degree

3. that I needed to take the asvab in order to be able to enlist in the ANCP, so I did take it and did sufficient

4. that I would enlist as an E-3, yet I have a BA degree and in reality would enlist I think, as an E-4

5. he tried to give me the private benjamin line that I'd be living on base in incredible officer's housing, yet, since I thought that was so bogus I kept digging around as he kept insisting that Yes, I'd be on base in officer's housing with my three cats, yet, the base I am hoping for only allows two cats and lets face it, as a single non-dependant officer I would stand the least likely chance to go on base as it is

6. on my forms yesterday at Meps he had not only the Army checked but, also the Marines, I crossed them off as well as crossed of my incorrect address on every form

There are some more but, I really do not want to trust my application to him at all. What do you think?

Thank you for your time and help too.

Gen

Gen,

I would not trust him. I would be very wary of anyone who says go enlisted first and than crossover as if it is sooo easy. I am prior enlisted and I had supervisors who would not let me go to school. I still have a chip on my shoulder and it has been many years. I would definately seek out another recruiter. Stick to your goal.

Good luck,

Pam

Gen, I'm a direct commission ANC officer. Therefore, I have not got a clue about the ANCP program. However, I agree with you that some, if not most, of what this recruiter has told you is inaccurate... to say the least.

I would not sign another document under the direction of this recruiter. Try this link for further Army Health Care assistance.

Thank you for your reassurance,

I sent an email and will cease signing! Will let you know how it goes as thing progress.

Hello again Pam,

I just realized that we never addressed your question about sign on bonuses!

What I know is that you are right, he told you something wrong. Please check the link in the post that Corvette guy sent below and try communicating through that.

In my case, now that my recruiter has boldly told me three easily verified untruths I feel righteous in ceasing my application with him.

As for your recruiters untruth, Army Nurse Candidates get a bonus, as well as any Nurse that signs can get the 10K bonus along with the 30K loan repayment, (which can be signed for twice I think, a year apart with a service extension) up to 60K.

Good luck!

hmmm, this sounds like single people aren't allowed to have [multiple] pets NOR live on base???

(ps where do you find the info on the number of pets you're allowed on any given base?)

Most bases will not allow more than 2 pets per household but,,, it is my experience that most bases do not enforce this.
