Considering a new grad position at St. David's in georgetown. Does anyone have experience at this particular hospital as a new grad or in general? If yes, what was the work environment like and would you recommend it? I would be moving to the area without knowing anyone and I want to make sure it's worth it. Thanks!

I worked there for a couple of years (med surge but mostly rehab). It's part of the dreaded hca chain, which means it's profit, which means they worship the almighty dollar. Seton's is a better hospital (worked in the one in Round Rock) but as a new grad, I think you should take what you can get. It's a typical hospital, so prepare to work yourself to death. Any specific questions, let me know. Georgetown is a nice little town, cute but close enough to Austin to enjoy yourself. That would be the best part of working there.

I used to live in Austin and can tell you that St. David's in general is a good system. That particular facility entered the system only within the last couple of years, so they may still be going through some changes to bring them in line with the other St. David's facilities. Even if you didn't like it there, you would have an in at the other St. David's hospitals (there are several in the area). If you are young and don't know anyone in Austin, you may or may not want to actually live in Georgetown. It's a cute little town but it's a lot of families and retirees. The commute from somewhere closer to Austin wouldn't be bad, given nursing work hours. Maybe get a 6-month lease and get a feel for the area first. Austin has tons of singles, you wouldn't have any trouble meeting people there. Good luck!

I accepted a position there last summer. It did not last long! I hope for your sake, that things have changed because the staffing was horrible. Lots of agency, not enough UAP's, and lots of management changes. I can only speak for Georgetown, not the rest of St. David's, but keep in mind it is part of HCA. Terrible benefits, compared to other hospitals in Texas and they truly have the for profit mind set, no matter what they tell you during the pep rally style orientation. I would not accept this position until I shadowed on the floor for a few shifts.
Did you work the m/s unit? I've heard things have gone downhill, and they weren't great to begin with.
