I have a question about Gentamicin? As in the Drug Handbook it states "The concentration of gentamicin in the solution should not exceed 1mg/mL". I would like to understand if the prescribed dose is 320mg how do I work out how much fluid it needs to be administered in?
Look forward to your helpful replies, as I find both Vancomycin and Gentamicin dosing confusing, thank you:confused:

The dose is 320mg and you need 1mg/ml. So you need 1 ml per 1mg.
....then you need 320ml, right?

320 ml, may be further diluted.

This sounds like a very high dose to me, but 320 ml would be the minimum. Are you sure that 320mg is one dose? Or is it 80 mg every 6 hours? Please double-check.

Would this be an intravenouse drip solution?
Gentamicin can be dosed once-daily or even at a larger dosing interval, up to 7mg/kg dose. I have often given 320mg doses in ICU pts.

I'd check with your pharmacist since gent must be dosed very carefully.
