You know what makes nursing school really hard? Depression.

  1. ...as if it's not hard enough already.

MAN it is hard to study or focus or be motivated about doing anything when these low spells hit. Anyone else deal with frequent bouts of depression? Normally mine are pretty short-lived, but I think the pressure of nursing school and the lack of support (family is 200 miles away) is compounding the problem.

I have a pharmacology test tomorrow and it will make or break whether I get an A... Hope it's gone tomorrow morning so I can cram effectively!!!

C'mon seratonin... you can do it!

I know when I'm down is it so much harder to study....but I HAVE noticed that once I make myself pick up that book or powerpoint, I do tend to feel better, whether it's for 15 minutes or 2 hours....at least I know I've done something....I tend to find myself berating myself for doing anything but studying when I know that the last test and a cumulative final are coming up...but I've kind of given up flogging myself and try to enjoy that time then make myself sit with my books or notes for at least some period of time everyday....and like I said, I tend to note I do feel a bit better once I've put some time in doing that....

Speaking of which, I've frittered my whole weekend away....but now the scrubs are washed/ironed, the materials I need for class and clinicals is together, so I guess I'll go make an attempt to open that book, lol....

It's been a tough year for me -- lost my mom last year, and in the past month lost a stepmom I was very close to and a friend who I used to work with....some days I feel like I am just going through the motion and don't know why....

Hopefully you've got some friends you can spend some down time with....recharging is also ever so helpful....

Oh yeah, been there. I tend to do everything else BUT study. I mean does my baseboards really need to be cleaned? And geez, how many times can I wipe down the windows? lol But i've found something that helps retain my memor or makes me focus more, either way it's working. Rosemary essential oil. Just one wiff wakes your brain up and enchances what you learn and helps your memory. So far so good!

Yeah, that's the problem... I've had three close friends in nursing school. One virtually destroyed our friendship at the beginning of the semester (her inability to communicate and her emotional immaturity leads to a lot of gossiping and a lot of hurtful emotional outbursts... couldn't take it anymore)... Another has been notably cold, distant, and inconsiderate lately. I'm down to one friend who lives an hour away from school, who I only get to see one day a week. Won't see her for another three days.

I wonder sometimes how much better my grades would be if I didn't have these low spells. It's times like this when I really crap out on studying and mess up my averages.

Such is life though... Not trying to complain... it's just hard and lonely at my school. I don't really have time to have a significant social life, so my ability to network with those outside of nursing school is very limited.

Yeah, no social life here either, my social life consits of my animals. My dog and birds. They don't gripe if I don't get to take them out, don't pressure me to drink but always there to make me smile! Couldn't get to far with out them.

Your true friends will come back in and out of your life when you really need them. That's what iv'e found out. They always seem to call me when I need it. Or there's always that one that you don't talk to for a month but when you do call she acts like it was yesterday you called. I love those calls! Plus that's what these forums are for! FAR AWAY FRIENDS! LOL.

Yeah sometimes I just feel like a zombie just staring into space when I know I should be studying or on these forums. I hate feelin down for no reason but in the end it will be worth it when we start working and not have to juggle so many things homework studying finances etc.

I havent seen sunlight in a while myself. My life consists of books, school, and the hospital. Thats the gig I signed up for though when I decided I was going to be doing this. Itll be alot of hard work but in the end, itll pay off

Well I got a 94 on my Pharm test . An A is a 93+ in our nursing school, and our pharm class is very challenging, so I'm very happy with it, especially considering how horrible I've been feeling lately, and the fact that the class average was an 89 . Praise the Lord. This is a real load off.

the closer it comes to the end of the semester, the more depressed I become. Has nothing to do with test grades, its clinical, I just feel like something bad will happen, and I won't be able to pass and go on to second level. Finished clinical, but will not get my evaluation for another week, clinical is the scary part, I don't want to have to repeat THAT. Add in the fact that half of my friends/classsmates failed the third exam, well maybe I will pass, and be alone next semester. I don't like either option, guess that's why I am depressed.

Oh yea......Ive been more depressed since starting nursing school than I have in my entire life. Its stress, time consumption, harsh instructors, social crap......everything combined.

I also really dont have a close friend in my group yet- and weve been together (the 12 of us) a year now......I guess I was absent the day everyone cliqued off. I hate going to class everyday knowing I dont even have a buddy, Im sad

Anyway at this point Im just trying to get through and be done. But to the original poster just know its not uncommon. Nursing is a hard road.
