What happened to my healthy lifestyle?

Nursing Students General Students

Before I started nursing school I was an avid runner (well, jogger is really more accurate!) Since school has started I can hardly remember that exercise used to be a big part of my life.

I am a second semester BSN student who has never, NEVER spent so much time sitting!! During pre-reqs and since school started I have gained 20 pounds and climbing -- I hate how I feel in my skin! Between class and study time, I can't seem to find any free moments to take care of myself physically (which is really emotionally and mentally too).

Today I bought a TransFlash to download med/surg class lectures (they are podcasted) and a headset to attach to the phone (which plays the TransFlash). This way, instead of sitting at the table listening to a replay of the lecture while going over my notes, I will be able to exercise while listening to the lecture ----- and review my notes separately)

Goal: Shed 20 pounds by May 15

Actions: 1) drink at least 64 ounces of water each day, and 2) walk/jog while re-listening to the med/surg lectures.

Food choices have been pitiful also, just too easy to "grab something quick" which generally equates to empty calories, but at this point focusing on two behaviors toward better health is about all I can handle (with the secret hope that the food choice thing will fall into place after a foundation is set with exercise and hydration!)

Anyone interested in joining in to create a support and cheer-team for better health while in nursing school?

Specializes in Med-Surg so far.

I really need to get on this train too. I don't want to focus too much on my eating habits (I live with my dad right now so there is always lots of yummy junk food around) but I would love to not feel like I'm going to fall over if I have to take more than 3 flights of stairs.

I did cut out beer after the Superbowl, so it's a good start!

How's everyone doing???

Well, only a week ago that I started to prioritize health again and even in that short time I feel so much better!! Water, water, water -- making sure to consume enough water during clinicals is a challenge for sure. During theory class days, much easier to keep water bottle handy.

Walking while re-listening to class lectures has felt so invigorating -- doesn't feel like I am sacrificing study time, even though I still have to go back over the lecture again while comparing my notes, at least I feel blood flow in my face and neck as well as limbs. Gosh, moving again (walking only, not running - way so out of shape!) in amongst all the sitting for class and study time reminds me of how vibrant our healthy bodies really are!!

I hope everyone is doing well ---- send a post and let us support you!

You got me re-motivated again! Our treadmill broke last fall but we finally got another one in January. I'm not really dieting very well, but I've been forcing myself to walk at least 4 times a week. I'm not losing weight but my clothes fit better. What a difference in the energy level! Thanks for getting this thread going and reminding me what's important!

I've ridden my stationary bike 8 x 30 min ea. in 2 weeks, and I'm using it as a study reward when I finish a chapter/task. It's in front of the TV, so I get to watch a show while I ride. I don't need to lose weight but would like to get my BP back into semi-normal ranges.

I need so much exercise and stuff I could go crazy...I'm whipped!

I'm overweight by quite a bit but would still like to work on this. I'm a mom to a 1 year old and I'm a nursing student in my senior semester and precepting this semester.

Today I did get some walking in yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
