What Do You Think My Chances Are of Being Readmitted

I got a 3.0GPA last semester. This semester I failed. I can write a letter to the school regarding why I was unsuccessful & be readmitted (pending their approval). I failed this semester b/c I suffered from Depression & Anxiety (my counselor diagnosed me). I know this is the reason for my failing b/c:

-When I would go out w/ my Boyfriend I completed my work quickly, efficiently & did well on my assignments

-When I worked all night on a careplan/studying for a test I failed/barely passed. When I completed it in a few hours, I got an A/B

-Last semester when I took my last exam for Fundamentals, I was VERY relaxed & calm-and got a B+ (89-91%) on it-which is the best I had ever done the ENTIRE semester.

-I was depressed b/c I live alone, have no friends, social life, job, etc., so I basically studied ALL day EVERY day. -B/c I was depressed, when I was studying I wasn't really concentrating & got anxious b/c I couldn't focus-which in turn let me to get worried, tense, and scaired, and failed my exams

-When being tested on my psych meds for Mental Health Class, my professor was like, "you did a good job."-I know I would do a good job b/c when I was studying, I was calm & was not worried/scaired

I have been wanting to become an RN since I was 6-7 years old, and I have worked so hard, I prey they let me back in b/c I know this work is NOT above my intellectual ability. I have signed up to work w/ a tutor this summer regarding my study & test taking skills & I have made an appointment to work w/ a Guidance & Counseling at a local college in my home town. If they let me back next semester, I will work 1 day a week (8 hrs.) at a Hospital, & join a student Club/something on campus-so I can get a social life. So w/ all the efforts that I am going to put in this summer along w/next semster (I will explain this in the letter i write to the school) I hope they let me back in, what do you think?

Ooof. I don't know if anyone here is qualified to answer a question like that. I think it depends on if there are other students that are requesting to be re-admitted, how much space is available in the program, etc. It sounds like you have a plan for improvement and with medical documentation from your counselor to show what brought you on that downward spiral last semester, I think you have a chance.

I'm sorry to hear about your mental health but I'm glad you got help and are able to see how things affected you! I wish you the best.

From one nursing student (ready to graduate) with mental health issues (bi-polar affective disorder type II and anxiety) to another,

I think it really depends on your school. Some schools are better than others about allowing appeals. The semester I failed one class, they allowed 5 other people who had to appeal return (I did not have to appeal, at my school you can fail one class, but more than that you have to write a letter)

But, I think it truly depends on so many factors that it is really hard to predict. I think you have quite a few things in your favor - you have a diagnosis, you have planned what you are going to do differently so that this does not happen again. I also think it would not hurt to take a little bit of the blame for the failure. As a person who has suffered with depression most of my life, I know that your failure was due to depression- but sometimes I think it is good to have a reason, but also take responsibility when appealling, though it seems that you are doing so.

I just want to wish you good luck and though it may seem like the end of the world when you have to repeat, over time it gets much easier to deal with.

Keep us updated.

i am sorry I am not really saying to take blame - but I think it is helpful to say that you had a role in failing and it is not just because of depression. In my experience it is somewhat off-putting if someone does not at least take a little personal responsibility for things. Gosh, I am having a hard time expressing what I mean sorry for that. I am not saying you are not taking responsibility. something to just acknowledge your personal role in the failure. Like: I was suffering from depression and I made a mistake by not recognizing it or doing something about it sooner. I so know that was probably not a possibility to recognize, as with my depression I usually don't see that I was in a depression until I am coming out, or had something dramatically bad happen to me (ie failing last year while on a med that was not working).

Yea, I know where you are coming from b/c during the beginning of the semester, I kept asking myself, "What is wrong w/ me?" over & over again. A sign of depression is when someone asks themselves that question. I didn't know that I was having depression until a month after school started. Right now I feel like saying ALOT in my letter to the schoolthat i'm afraid they will just think I am rationalizing. I know I need to take blame, I just don't know how to do it. Also, I don't want to face it and say it's my fault even though in part it is. Man, I'm so angry.

when does your letter have to be in? How long do you have to wait for the decision?

This may be a silly question, but have you asked your therapist for assistance with writing the letter and support regarding this situation? I know when I had to miss a couple of weeks of school due to mental health problems, my therapist was willing to write a note of explanation to my instructors. I'm not saying that your therapist will write your request for re-admittance for you, but they should be able to point you in the right direction if you're stuck.

You have a medical condition, just like if someone had new onset diabetes or got pregnant during the semester and had to drop. You're not rationalizing...you're describing symptoms of your illness that led to your academic problems. You might also be able to talk to your school's disability support services office. They can help you with receiving support after you get back to school if necessary, if your depression warrants additional academic assistance.

Good luck! I'm all about advocating for my fellow student, so I hope this helps!

Wow, I never thought of asking my therapist for help in writing the letter. Thank you, though I will call on Monday and ask. I am writing the letter now and there isn't a certain length, there is just certain criteria that I have to write about. I also never thought about describing my symptoms of my illness, I have pamphlets on them that my counselor gave me, and have circled some of things that I was experiencing.

My school, no you would not be readmitted but I think it is different for every school. The only people that failed that were readmitted to my school were people who had tragedy, like one student infant had to have a heart transplant, anothers mother was killed in a car wreck. The reason they give for being so strict on not letting people back in is because there is such a long waiting list to get in and such high standards to get in, they say you took someone else that would have been successfuls chance away, I don't agree with that but they are very strict about it.

Also my school bases it mostly on how badly you failed. For our school a 76.9 if an F, so if you failed with a 74 or more then you have a much higher chance of being let back in, although a 3.0 GPA for our program would be a no go.

All you can do is explain your situation factually without making excuses and lay out step by step how you will make sure to be successful next semester. If they do not let you back in then take some classes to get you GPA up and try again

In my letter I have to include a primary and secondary plan of action. Does this sound bad for my secondary plan of action, "I plan on applying to nursing programs, I was accepted into 6 nursing schools including ******** University, so I am going to call them up and apply for admission for this fall." I'm not going to use those exact words, but should I write that stuff in my 2ndary plan or does that sound bad???

I'm not sure I would mention other schools in a letter asking for admittance, they may just tell you to go to one of those other schools. Like a previous poster stated get your therapist to help with this letter...they are really good at this stuff! ;) And let us know what happens!
