Should I consider working in medical field while in school

I am currently a junior pursuing my BSN. I do not work @ the present time, however I am considering working @ a medical facility somewhere just for the extra experience. People have told me that this would also be beneficial to me when I graduate and apply for a job. I am torn on what I should do, I do not have a lot of time with clinicals and all, I would have to work around school schedule, on weekends most likely. What kind of work could I apply for as a student and should I consider volunteering instead, would this give me the same reference as working. Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you

I have mentioned this in another thread but I dumped my corporate job for a clinical setting with no experience and crappy pay but it's the best move I've ever made. People will take on inexperienced if you're enthusiastic and sincere.

As long as it doesn't interfere with your coursework, I agree that it is a great idea. I worked as a tech my last quarter of nursing school and it helped me tremendously, as I'd never worked in the medical field prior.

Good luck!

I left a great paying (notice I didn't say great job) to go to work weekends at the hospital for about 1/3 of what I used to make. It is the best thing I've ever done. Sure, I could've stayed at my other job....studied there.....worked my class schedule around it....but I've enjoyed working at the hospital and learning what all this stuff is, hands on, that we talk about in school.

There are all kinds of jobs that you can do while you are in school. I currently am doing the unit secretary thing....gives me lots of time to study while at work. As I get further along, I may think about a tech position. We also have lab techs, monitor techs, student nurses, etc....all of which I'll be qualified to do by this summer.

You can always just do prn and at least get your foot in the door......
