Practicing on each other

Did you have to stick/be stuck by other students in nursing school. I am okay with being practiced on with blood draws and shots but I cannot imagine having someone practice an IV on me. I really hate IV's. :scrying: I know our school has a simulated patient but I want to know if I am going to get stuck. My godmother is an RN and she had to but that was 30 years ago.

Thanks,

Andrea

When we were in fundamentals we practiced the procedures on manequins like ng tube insertion, foley insertion, wound care etc while we did do physical exams on each other and listened to each others heart and lungs. But we did give each other flu shots for practice. This helped us to be more confident in the clinical setting when we had to work on real live patients.

We were told that OSHA won't allow it. We practice on manaquins (did I spell that right?) and then go to clinicals...

oh man,...you guys are scaring me! I never even thought of the fact that we "might" have to practice on each other. I don't mind my blood being drawn but I have had terrible experiences with IV's (most recently when I was being induced in Oct.) and really don't want ANYONE giving me one! Maybe I'd better ask about this.....

I am right with ya. When I was induced Dec '02, I had a bad experience with IV's. I think I am traumatized for life:crying2: .

tuesday we gave each other subq injections of sterile saline in the abdomen...WHY does that seem so gross??

next week we're giving an injection to OURSELVES...my instructor said it's so when you're doing patient teaching and they say "you don't know what it's like having to give yourself a shot." we can say that WE DO..

hmph....i've already given myself epinephrine several times because i'm allergic to bee stings...you'd think that would count!

we are going to use the mannequin for IM injections...thank god :)

When I went to school (long, long time ago) we did everything to each other. SQ's, IM's, TB testing, NG's, and bed baths. I was just grateful that we did'nt have to do what my friend who had gone 15 years before me had to do. In her class to learn pericare, they practiced on each other. The instructer placed a glob of peanut butter and strawberry jelly on a pad and the the "volunteer" patient dressed in hospital gown only had to lay in it while being cleaned up. If they tried to stay out of the mess the instucter grabbed them by the ankles and pulled them down into it. Thank Goodness that practice was stopped before I got there :imbar
