PEDS/OB- not passing

Just last week I wrote a post about how I am struggling a bit in nursing school. Today I took my peds/ob test and got a 70%. An all time low for me. I feel defeated and awful. At this point I am literally just crying, i don't have an appetite I feel like nothing. Please someone help me with study tips

For every exam i usually ..

read out the ppt

write out each slide a minimum of five times

do as many practice questions as I can.

I guess that was not good enough this time. I am so close to graduating (may), but now I feel further than ever. If i fail this class, then I have to wait a year to enroll again in my program. I am at a complete loss right now with myself and im so dissapointed with how I scored

I'm currently taking maternity/OB and what has been helping me when I don't have all the time in the world to read 500 pages, is a supplemental study guide (saunders comprehensive review for NCLEX and HESI) and practice questions. If there's a concept that is particularly difficult and I'm just not absorbing, I watch YouTube videos on the subject. I just type in something like "NCLEX nursing placenta previa". It really helps if I can read it, hear it, see it, test myself on it and do it (draw a concept map).

HI amynursing,

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with peds/ob. I am taking OB right now so I know there is always information overload going on in your brain. First of all, you have to find you learning style and if one thing does not work try another. Writing the information 5 times is only memorizing, this technique will not work. You have to fully understand the material in order to critically think and apply the knowledge to the questions, so please read the book (not the whole chapter, just pick out the essential information and pay attention to the boxes). Also after each test, make an appointment with the teacher to go through ALL the questions and rationales to the answers. Do not wait to study the week of the test. As soon as class is over, find a quiet place and go over the material again as it is fresh in your head. if you are a visual and auditory learner, someone mentioned registerednursern, she is a life saver and will simplify the materials for you to understand. Also KhanAcademy is a great resource. Practice NCLEX style questions everyday (at least 20 after each chapter you've learnt). And lastly, take breaks in between study. Do not study for 4 hours straight and no breaks, this is very crucial. Utilize your school's tutoring center.

Good luck with your next exam. You got this!!!

stop re-writing everything down, it's a waste of time. make sure you are understanding why certain nursing interventions are done and for what reason. if you are re-writing everything, you aren't going to understand "why" and you will be lost in a test when they word the question funny.

does your professsor give a blueprint? Fill out the thingy before each test

does your professor do exam reviews? See what questions you got wrong to see if you aren't understanding the material or if they are dumb mistakes that you know.

Honestly, your first test will be the hardest (that's what my OB professor said) because they overload you with basic information. I hated it and I have no interest in OB but I still got an 82. The next tests will be easier to comprehend and less techinical; more "emergency" situation type questions.

When I was in school, we were given a study guide. Pretty much if you could answer the study guide questions, you knew the subject. Reading the book was required, but just look to answer the study guide.
