Nursing Or Radiolgy

Hello everyone I hope we all enjoyed our Monday today. I am giving up on trying to get in the nursing program. I have done all pre reqs in the last year and still don't have a spot at the community or the private college. I have a 2.75 gpa. I am upset because almost all the colleges I called or applied to have a huge wait list I am 21 Years old and won't be able to start the program until Fall 2005 or 2006. I will not hang around. I am very impatient when it comes to my education. I am thinking about radiology, I can start that program in January 2004 and be done in two years. Should I wait or go for the Radiology program.

It just depends on how badly you want to be a nurse.

There are a lot of people on this board that have applied to a nursing program more than once. If nursing is really where your heart is, a year or two in the grand scope of things is nothing!! I know it's hard to wait (i'm pretty impatient too) but sometimes it can be the best thing for you. You never know what can happen. Well, best of luck in your decision!!

It depends on what you really want. You need to really think about it. I had to apply to the ADN program twice until I was accepted. I'm 25, and I can honestly tell you that the older you get, The harder you'll work at it. When I went to school the first time around, I didn't take it as serioulsy as I do now. One or two more years isn't that big of a difference, it will give you more time to put things into perspective, and maybe you could take classes that go toward your BSN while your wating to get in.

bingo.

I had the same question last year and decided on nursing for a couple of reasons, first Nursing is what I always wanted and second at our school radiography was nearly impossible to get into. 313 applicants for 25 spots. Plus nursing is always in need of good nurses, radiography has points where they are shortages and then no job vacancies at all. You really have to decide what is best for you, My brother in law is an xray tech-my sister is a nurse. They are both happy in their careers. Good luck either way.

Princess, check out http://www.radiography.com and cyber-talk to a lady named Joanie. She can tell you more realistic things about radiology.

If nursing is your first love, you will not be happy in radiology.

Also I would look at the demand for Xray techs over Nurses and how easy it would be to get a job.. Around here most Xray techs stay at their jobs for a long time so there isn't a heavy turnover rate, so many of the Xray techs just graduating are having problems finding jobs.. Well nurses on the other hand have offers jumping at them around here..

Good Luck on your decision..

Well unfortunatly I think a lot of people are having the same problem you are with getting into a nuring program or having along waiting lists. I think that would drive me nuts!

If you *really* want to be a nurse though I would say just keep trying! Maybe go back and retake some classes to raise your GPA to make yourself more competitve or take some extra classes (like med terminology or something) to be more competitive.

I dont know a whole lot about radiology, my husband is looking into it right now. I know here, for now anyways, there is a lot of job openings. Before you jump ship and switch majors look and see what the job field is like for Radiology- maybe that would give you a better idea? I know here the waiting list for radiology is over a year long and the nursing here has no wait list that I am aware of.

Good luck though with whatever you decide!

Thanks for that link you provided. My husband is thinking about radiology when I am done with nursing school and wants to find out more about it. I know here where I live they are in demand, not as much as nurses but enough to know he can get a job. I dont know what it is like anywhere else though, would be interesting to find out.

Thanks again

Hey. Good links. This has more info than my son's guidance counselor.

You can also check out auntminnies.org its a radiography site that is much like this one. There is forums on there that you can ask questions about school and about the job. Check it out.
