My class must be bad.

My class must be very bad because a new testing policy has been put into effect. If a student calls in on a test day, there is an automatic 5% deduction off of the final test score. You know, I had to duck my head when that was announced because waaaayyy back in fall quarter, I did skip two test days to take care of personal issues. On a typical test day, there is a larger amount of absences, so actually, I can understand this policy for this quarter. Just sucks if you really are sick. I hope that for future classes, this isn't in effect. Anyone else have a penalty like this if test days are missed.

Retaking a test because of a bad grade.....that's ridiculous. I mean my school is a lot like high school and some classes drop the lowest grade, but retaking a test! Not even in elementary school. I don't think that's a good thing.

Yes, but our program you have to get a 75 to pass EACH test....if you get below a 75 they kick you out of the program...it is not cumulative GPA. Every test there is a chance of failing out. And the "retake" is so much harder than the original...I found that out.

At my school, if someone was absent on the day of an exam. They had to have a written excuse, had to be ready to take the exam the next day and the exam given is essay and just to add spice -- at the instructors discretion it could also be an ORAL question and answer period.

OK... If you are talking about the post about retaking a test if you make below a 75, then I'm fixing to clarify that... If you are talking about something else, then ignore this :)

Its not like the school is allowing retakes to make your grade better.... YOU HAVE NO CHOICE... If you want to continue in the program you must make a 75 on each and every single test... Not just maintain a 75 for the whole semester, that is a piece of cake.... SO.. its not so riduculous after all... And when you take the retake, you only get a 75 on it... Even if you score a 95, so it doesn't make your grade any better... It just keeps you in the program.....

Hope that clears things up for you...

My program you have to call before test time. You can only miss one test per class. Instead of a retake, the final counts twice. If you miss more that one test then you recieve a 0 for the second, third, fourth... tests.

i'm sorry but why is there so much pressure for tests in nursing school? i think re-taking a test (if you missed it on the actual test date) should be up to the discretion of the teacher. why? scenario; i'm a good student i'm always there for test and on that one day i miss a test for a good valid reason... i have to be penalized? come on folks stuff happens in life. like i have a child he might fall very ill on a test day should i get penalized for that? of course i would make up the exam a.s.a.p! and if it has to be an essay type exam i would take it! but to actually be penalized because something happenned that i had no control over?

i think we are too hard on ourselves sometimes. even med school students don't go through all this... i don't get it?

in my first post, i was referring to the same students who are absent on scheduled test days.

We have to call in on test day, no call = 0%. I assume they would make an exception to that if it turned out later that you were in ICU on a vent or something. Callers with valid excuses can retake, all retakes are on one day at the end of the semester and are essay question format.

I think this is fair, those with legitimate difficulty have a chance to make up the test and the policy is difficult enough that people won't be tempted to abuse it, which is obviously what they are trying to avoid.

As one of my professors put it, "Unless you're in a hospital or a jail cell, don't miss, because you'll get a zero."

For the hospitalized or criminal among us ;) , they do makeups on the day of the final. It's usually an essay format test, regardless of the test material. Those suuuuuuck!

Donna :)

WOW only 5% ours is 20 points! And our tests this semester average around 60 points each - so 20 off is quite a chunk . So I would go in on my death bed - to hard to pass otherwise.....

We have to get a B or above in every class or we are kicked out and there is no program in the city that will take us.
