LPNs looked down on

Published

I was so happy that I was accepted into the LPN program at a cc. My excitement made me tell people, family, friends, nurse secretary, prof. All of them say they are very disappointed in me because I can do better. My professors especially made me feel very bad and sad. I did also get accepted into the RN program. At this time, I needed to postpone that due to finances. I cannot quit my job since they pay full tuition and books. I work the midnight shift also. On my acceptance letter was all of the fees that needed to be paid in less than 30 days. This financial notice came without warning (uniforms, cpr, etc books - i expected but not everything else so quickly )

LPNs that I have spoke to highly recommended becoming a LPN to get a feel and experience.I have seen A students struggling, failing etc and only a very small portion of rn nursing entrants actually finish the program at this cc. I need to do this! One professor actually told me to go on welfare. I was insulted.

Why are LPNs looked down on? I actually had someone ask me are you going to be a nurse or a LPN. This is what I need to do for me right now. Why doesnt anyone be happy for ME? There seems to be so much prestige with being an RN and I dont want to take anything from them but is being a LPN so low? I shut off my phones and am isolating for a few hours. Im hurt but still proud of myself regardless and look forward to the classes and actually completing the program. Because to me it is not so much that you get in but that you actually complete the program and become a nurse.

I plan to enter an RN program once I am an LPN, the bridge program. Im glad that I can come here to get things out. Thank you all for listening.

The best answer when people ask why you're not doing this or that is "I'm doing what's best for ME." Don't let people discourage you for what is best for you.

I totally agree.. end of story. That's ALL that you need to say.

Don't own the negativity. You're going about it in an excellent way, the way that works for you and you should be proud of that regardless of how anyone else feels.

So true. Hold your head up and hang on to that joy and pride in doing what YOU chose to do. This is for YOU.. not to please everyone else.

So very sorry for the negative feedback, but ppl can only make you feel hurt and bad if you LET them Please don't allow this.

We support you, and are happy for and with you ! :) (((HUGS)))

The extra time spent getting an RN may not seem like much to people who aren't dealing with your situation on a daily basis. I don't know precisely what that situation is, but for me, the added time it takes to become an RN means an extra year of not being able to pay the bills, having to beg social service agencies for money just to pay the heat bill, not being able to even afford Christmas presents for my son, etc. An extra year of that can seem like decades. But to someone outside of the situation, it just isn't a big deal. So, I definitely see why you're seeking the LPN first.

Secondly, the waiting lists for RN programs are unreal. It really isn't just an extra year to get the RN - if you aren't on a waiting list yet, that translates into at least three extra years because of the wait time.

Lastly, once you have your LPN, there will be no problem getting into an RN program and finishing up pretty quickly. It seems like a solution that meets all of your needs. The experience you gain as an LPN will be invaluable when you get your RN.

So...I think it's a great decision! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! They don't have to live your life, and becoming an LPN will open up so many doors to futher educaiton - perhaps even tuition assistance with your RN.

Congratulations!

Congrats! There will always be people who have to ruin a happy moment.Don't let them get you down-I have had more family and friends say that I was too smart to be a nurse and ask why I wasn't going to med school. ARRRGHHHHH..... This is your life and you know what is best for you. Again, congratulations
