Can someone give me some advice? I've been a C average student since starting school in September,my nursing advisor is making comments now to me saying Ive been just teetering along all year and she is holding pell grant $ from me she says "Its the school policy" I want to see if your going to make it through until 4th quarter. I honesstly have tried, I'll admit sometimes I could have studied harder and longer but mostly I cant remember alot I've studied when it comes to taking tests!! If anyone has some advice please help! I really feel so discouraged and just feel like quitting. I know I would make a good nurse but its my grades!! I feel this school prefers young and smart students from the different things that have happened this year with other students! Sorry this is so long! Any advice is appreciated!

I too am in Lpn school. I have been working my butt off. I started out with all my grades in the 90s. Well, I am working just as hard and my grades are in the 80s. I even failed one Life Science test but have an :p 88 average anyway. I am married and have 4 kids and work part time. I often give up sleep time to study extra, it is all worth it. We lost people who finished a course with a 69 average. Hang in there you are not going to ace everything. Sometimes changing your study habits helps. I use index cards others re type there notes. Good luck to you, Nancy :)

In nursing school I had a study group. Didn't use them during pre-reqs but needed them in nursing school to stay on target. Might try that. Also, it sounds like you KNOW you aren't studying as hard as you need to. You can't get the knowledge from osmosis, you have to work at it. Remember, this adventure will culminate with the boards, that's the ultimate test. If you can't concentrate on your school tests, you'll have a hard time with the licensure test. Don't assume that your age has anything to do with it. Most nursing students are older (I was 39 when I started the pre-reqs). It's not your age your instructors are concerned with. With C averages it only takes one really bad test to bounce you out of your program. I'm not one who advocates everyone needs to be a straight A student, but I also think that someone with consistent C's is taunting fate. If you really want this, then you will have to find a way to make it a reality for yourself. It's easy to feel picked on in nursing school, it's ultimately up to you to prove them wrong. No one but YOU has the control over the situation. And you DO have the control to become a nurse if you want it as much as you think you do. Best wishes and go get em.

believe in yourself. there are many techniques how to get high grades but it varies from person to person. find out what suits for you. remember that quitters never be succeed so keep moving on..

You should try searshing the net for some study tips. You might need to make flash cards or re type the notes. Me- I like to record the class, follow along with my notes and add stuff to it. I also make flash cards for definitions. See if your proffesoors will let you record lecture. You also might need to rethink your schedule. How much time are you spending on working, studying, lounging, etc? Think about it. You can do this, don't give in!!! Re-evaluate yourself and make change where it is needed! HANG in there- this is yours!!!:chuckle

Also I type my notes out when I study and print them out..It helps me tremendously..When it comes to memorizing things, get index cards and make flash cards out of them..Also form a study group..

Thanks to all of you for replying!! You have given me great advice and encouragement! You all are right, i should TRY harder and I am! I also am married Lady Marine and have 3 kids and it is really hard some times to get any studying in, I just turned 42, but didn't feel "old" until I started school! Thanks fssmith for the encouragement about my age you've opened my eyes to things I didn't see before. I can only go forward and do my best! I hope I can be of help to someone like all of you helped me!Thanks for the websites ibmissy!

Just wondering....in our LPN program, we have to have a B average (80%) or higher to pass...you had stated you have C average (a C in Florida is 70-79)..does any other school go by the B average? I was just wondering...good luck with studying! Sometimes I study for hours, get a bad grade...and the other day, I completely forgot about a test, and I got a 94...so who knows!

JnJTyson: We go by the C average here, grading scale is: A 100-94

B 93-87

C 86-80

Thanks for asking,I know what you mean by studying so hard for a test and you think you should do so good and yo dont and other times you dont study much and you do better! I really dont think I deserve to have my pell grant money withheld because I have a C average do you? I just dont think she could do that, I know it would look bad on HER and the school if I dont pass the NCLEX Exam in Sept. they dont get credit for the school if students dont pass the first time taking the test. we review for th test starting in June.

I thought for the grants, as long as you passed the classes you got the money..regardless of if you were passing with a 96 or an 80. I forgot about the old-school grading system of 94-100 is an A. We just go by 90-100 is an A and 80-89 is a B.

You may want to talk to the financial aid office. I'm not familiar with financial aid, but from what I know..if you pass you pass. Holding your grant money isn't right!

Good luck! =0)

I see no reason for her to "hold" your grant. In my school you must maitain a C average. If you weren't entitled to that grant you wouldn't get it. Pell grants are awarded twice a year. If your in school and carry enough credits and maintain a C average you should be collecting your $. You didn't mention being on academic watch. I think you ought to talk to somebody in the financial aid office. Did somebody in there hand over your cash or what? Is this instructor a part time financial aid officer or what? Are you telling us everything?

Irishrose: Let me start at the beginning,I was called into the office one day with some other students about $ we received. I got the pell grant and also I get help from a local gov. office for going to school due to I was laid off prior to going to school and my unemployment ran out so If I turn in my hours twice a month and have instructors sign that I was at school I get paid for going and also they send $ to the school (this is a LPN prgram at a local hospital)anyway, sorry this is long, my instructor, she is the head of the school, she doesnt take care of financial aid, a woman comes in from a local comm. college and does financial aid for her,she showed me that a check had come from the local office to cover any bills, she said since we got this money first before the pell grant we apply this to your bill first, so what was left was $38.00 for me, and she had me sign and date for the check to be cashed for school, and after I did that she told me she will be holding the pell grant $ that was for me due to yur grades, I dont want you to have to pay the school back $ in case you might not make it through to 4th quarter(we grad. in Aug.)The pell grant checks should be coming in a couple weeks.
