My daughter, who is 27 yoa, has started the electricians classes and works full time as an apprentice. She earns 26.00 an hour and that includes full benefits. At the end of 3 years she will bring home 38.00 and hour and that's take home!! If you add in her benefits her hour rate is 51.00 per hour. To run electric in a residentail setting. Nobody is dying. No-one is going to sue her. No family or MD yelling at her.She is as happy as a pig in a polk. Yea-she has her RN and doesn't give a damn. While I am still plugging along to finish. Go figure. :imbar

:angryfire I spent alot of cash putting my daughter through nursing school. 4 months after graduation she has decided nursing is not for her. (keep in mind-that I am not finished with nursing school) She has applied, and been accepted to a local electrician's union. The money will be the same-the pressure will be nothing. The benefits are better and there is a light(no pun intended) at the end of the tunnel. Am I dissapointed? Yes. I would have loved to have her follow my footsteps. Do I wish I would have made the same choice a long time ago. Yes. Nobody appreciates a thing I do. I always wanted to be a nurse. Why? I can't explain it. But- I really wish something else would have lit a fire under me. Sorry.

I'm a middle aged nursing student with plenty of my own opinions. But I am still idealistic enough to believe that as a nurse I will always put my own beliefs on the back burner when it comes to caring for pts no matter what. A woman's right to choose is one thing. A nurses right to choose certain types of pts is another IMHO. If you don't believe in this procedure on a moral or religious level, I doubt you'd find yourself working in an abortion clinic. That's about as far as nurses right to choose goes I think. That said, I hope and pray that I have the grace to care for whatever pt comes through the door no matter how distasteful. Lord, hear my prayer.

A girl friend of mine in Duluth, Applied for a position as a flight nurse at her hospital after a posting. She had 8 yrs in the PICU. The only time they ever called on her was to transport a peds pt to a specialty hospital.She transfered to the ER and after two years they still have'nt picked her up.

Hi PICUKID. I had a son who spent the last 12 years of his life in a PICU. I ended up in nursing school for the same reasons- Although I have NO desire to end up in the PICU. My kid suffered from reoccuring brain tumors and he had no problems with math either. We use the same math over and over again. Once you learn it you got it. You have the same math as I do-only with better grades! Good for you. Set your goals high. Talk to a guidence person. People with disabilities are entitled to help. I do know this-if you have your hydro problem under control-those deficits tend to repair with time. If, you find out that nursing isn't for you there are plenty of other fields out there for you. You are special and because of that you have alot to offer. There is OT, and PT and Speech. I'm sure I don't have to tell you all of this. Keep your options open and fly girlfriend. We are hear for you no matter what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok. You guys are killing me. As a nursing student, I think I need to ask the question. What are the guidlines for asking advice here? If I can't ask this group of educated, experienced and proffessional people a question on a case who can I ask? If I leave out a name and make up a town, lie about the circumstances, and fudge anything else I can think of-will I be ok then? I have a best friend that happens to be a trauma nurse that I ask advice of ALL the time. She knows where I live. Alot of the stuff that happens in Chicago end up on the news. Could I somehow be setting myself up for trouble just by discussing it? Lord help me. I learn so much here. I never saw this format as a grave I coul;d be digging for myself. I try so hard to watch what comes out of my mouth-but I thought a case discussion would be ok here. Yes or no?

1.A If you think a fellow nurse is drunk and do nothing about it you are just as responsible. The hospital always gets sued along with anybody else remotely connected. 2.B It is the pts information after all. Iwent through this when my kid was dx'd with a brain tumor. Anytime I wanted to see it a nurse would go through it with me step by step. I think this is so if I had any questions she could answer them or explain. And I also think because it is a legal document it can't leave their sight. What if I removed something? See what I mean. 3.I have no idea.The duties couldn't come from the mayor or govenor. What the hell do they know about it? Good question.

My brother in law is in town job hunting. He paints cars. Also has trouble with interviews. After 3 interviews that he felt went badly- I asked him to be upfront about the jitters to the next interviewer. He did just that. The man went out of his way to make him feel more comfortable and he got the job.

I'm with you Krojas21. I met a great BSN when I did a clinical rotation at a big city hospital. She said she felt she had a duty to teach to the best of her ability. It didn't matter if it was a family member, a patient, or a low on the totem pole student like me. She was the most caring and repectful person I have ever met. She never made me feel stupid and she would never say anything unkind. And she wasn't an instructor of mine.She just happened to work on the same floor I did. Let me tell you every hour I spent with her was a lesson in the sheer joy of learning. I keep her in my prayers to this day. God bless good nurses.

I went to the Byman school for Medical Assisting in 1978 in Phoenix Az. When we graduated we had a pin and a great BIG cap.We had to wear it all through the clinicals. I felt like a fake. Then In Practical Nursing school we had another cap that we took our pictures in. Either way- I worked my but off for both and wear neither.
