Externship!

Nursing Students General Students

I just got the email yesterday, after interviewing on Tuesday, that I got accepted for my hospital's externship. I am so excited! I got selected for a rotation known as Outpatient Services, which includes pre-op, post-op, endo, wound care, and pre-admissions. I get to start in the end of May! Yay!

But anyways, anyone have any experience working as an extern? What;s it like? Thanks!

Congrats!!!!

I think your externship experience depends on how well it is organized by the hospital. I had a previous externship that was awful, I basically changed sheets and stocked all 12 hours and learned absolutly nothing. At the hospital I am at now, I also change sheets and stock, but I do so much more!!! I get lots of practice with "skills" (blood draws, foleys, IVs) and the staff is always interested in showing me interesting stuff that I have not had a chance to see in clinical. This is definately a much better experience and I am really learning "how to be a nurse" not just "how to make a bed". (although I must admit, I have become very good at changing sheets!! LOL)

Good luck to you!

Joy, you must be thrilled!! That is the icing on the cake of being almost finished with your first year of nursing school.

Can you share what sort of question were asked during your interview, how long it took, and how long before you were notified with the good news after the interview? There's a bunch of us in the boat you just stepped out of.

Again, a big hand for the new nurse extern!! :yeah:

I was told yesterday that I would be offered a student nurse position in the ER of a local hospital for the summer!! I am SO jazzed!! I look forward to building on what we have learned so far and getting a lot of practice on skills that I haven't had an opportunity to learn in clinicals thus far. Yeahhhhhhh!!! This way, I won't go into third semester next fall a total dunce after a longggggg summer!!

Thank you so much for your replies!

I was asked why I wanted to be an extern, why I would be a good extern, how I would handle a "bad" co-worker, and things like that. It was almost a half hour long and I was interviewed by people from 4 different departments, as well as the head of clinical ed. My interview was Tuesday at 11am and I received my acceptance email Thursday morning first thing.
