Desktop vs laptop

Hi all. I'll be starting first year nursing classes in Aug. and will need to buy a computer. I was wondering how many of you have desktops and how many have laptops? If you have a desktop do you really wish you had a laptop? What are the draw backs to a laptop besides cost and potential for leaving it on the bus?

I use an old 133 desktop that my mom gave me. It works fine to surf the net, and to use MS word to type nursing papers.

I would like to buy a laptop now that I've graduated, but I need to research them a bit more before I get into anything like that.

many students I graduated with don't have any computer, they used the computer lab. ( my school had very convenient hours)

A friend of mine asked me today how the Mouse worked with NCLEX, haha. gotta love her.

I love my notebook. I've had it for about two months now (an apple powerbook). I cannot imagine going back to a desktop. I'm not tied down to one certain spot in the house anymore! One thing you should really consider when purchasing a notebook is the weight. I would say buy the lightest possible one that still meets your needs. My notebook is 4.9 lbs and it's heavy enough. I can't imagine the 7 pounder ones that are out there!

It's a personal decision, of course, with pros & cons for both. Myself, I use and enjoy my desktop because I can have a full-sized keyboard in front of me (scrunched laptop keyboards are a bit harder to use in my opinion), as well as a larger screen. Plus I always feel like the screen on a laptop is too close to my face-- I like to have the monitor a good foot back from the keyboard.

I will be getting a laptop. Simply because I want to be able to work whenever and wherever!

Yes, they cost more, but I see it as an investment in my future. The conveniences are just too good to pass up! And like someone else posted, with a rolling backpack, there are no worries for carrying it!

we have a desktop already, but that will be hubbys! lol

Laptops are the way to go!

Back in my third semester of nursing school, I had an instructor who talked really fast, Since I type a lot faster (and neater) than I wwrite so I wentt out and bought a laptop without researching. I loved my laptop and it helped me do a lot better in my classes. not to mention when I got bored, I had solitare and freecell to play. Got caught and ridiculed a couple of times but loved my laptop until it got hit by lightening this spring. the warrenty won't pay for the new screen and I am not paying $1000 for a new one when my computer cost me $900. I am back to my old desktop. I am saving my money for a Dell desktop with a PDA. Hope this helps
