Nurses General Nursing

I know the local hospitals in my area are offering nurse refresher class. Is it only for those nurses who has not been working as a nurse and wants to activate their license and reenter nursing field? or can anybody take this class?

Specializes in family practice.

I believe anyone can take the class unless otherwise specified. To be safe i would call the number listed to register, they should be able to answer your question better

Specializes in Education, IV Therapy, Travel Medicine.

Each program has their own criteria. Some only take in-active nurses that have been out 4-10 years. Others will take any previously licensed nurses. Some only do LVN/LPN others take RNs only. Best to call like honey said but, if that one doesnt fit your needs call your state BON for others or google nurse refresher and your state and that should come up with a list. Also, look at the BON for criteria to make sure the program is going to meet your needs. I have recently seen more nurses coming back (acitve and in-active) with more years out. We have started to customize our program to meet the individual needs by doing simulation labs for those that have been out longer, extended clinicals in more settings, and anything else we see that needs to be done to make sure they are successful in this transition back to competent practice. It is a challenge but, I think each of the nurses as well as their future patients are worth it.

hi txnurseeducator

i am just so frustrated with not being able to find a job in the hospital and being rejected so many times to a new grad program now i am considering other options inluding refresher class. if i can take this class then i can have little of exposure to clinical nursing in the hospital setting and i am more than willing to pay for it. i wonder what refresher course consists of and if this class includes working in the unit with preceptor.

I am sorry you are frustrated. It is a hard pill to swallow that the facilities don't want you as is although, it would just take a bit longer orientation to get most refreshers up to speed. It is like the issue with most nurses being forced to go back to school (not that education is not a good thing) but, they act like it is the only way to prove competency or learn concepts. So, experienced nurse managers, educators, etc have a deadline to complete the MSN no other Masters will do in order to keep their job. That being said our Refresher Program meets Texas and several other state criteria to return to practice. Other, states may have different rules like Florida requires a rotation through Psych which we do not do here. Call me so we can go over where you are and make sure what the rules or to save you time and money. We do a Comprehensive Med Surg review, Pharmacology, Medication Adminstration, Documentation, Professional Roles, Legal and Ethical Issues, Standards of Care, Evidence Based Practice, Skills Lab, IV Therapy, Physical Assessment, A&P Review, Drug Calculations, Resume Preparation, and more. Google our website (PHES Nurse Refresher) or call toll free # 877-313-7437. They do not allow us to post links to the site or emails. Whomever you choose make sure they have clinical affiliations already set up. That is the most difficult part. Chin up! You can do it!

Thanks TXNurseEducator. I will definitely look into it.

I wonder how nurse refresher program is different from nurse internship program and how long the cinical is going to be.
