what kind of non-hospital nursing are you doing

Nurses General Nursing

I work in a hospital right now but I am thinking of doing something else in a couple of years when my daughter goes to school.

For those of you who are working outside of the hospital, what are you doing and how do you like it?

Thanks in advance for sharing. ;)

4 years ago i thought i would never leave the hospital setting but i did and now work as a visiting nurse in long term home health care. i see approx. 5-6 pt's a day in a 10-15 mile radius. these pt's have chronic health conditions, i do an assessment, oversee their meds, supervise home health aides, anything else pertinent to their particular needs.

i work in ny, not every state has this type of program as it is quite costly. i make a good salary, about 10-15,000 better than in the hospital on nights!!! and no weekends or holidays either.

i have a lot of flexibility with my daily schedule as well, i only have to go into my office about twice a week if i want. it's not the perfect job but it's good with a lot of autonomy and you get to have a close, continuing relationship with your patients.

i currently have a caseload of about 25 patients which is normal.

another option in home health/visiting nurse is short term care which is a little more hectic and deals more with stuff like wound care, iv tx, teaching, etc.

hope this helps a little bit, i'm sure there are a lot of other options open to you, good luck!
