Hi, I was wondering does the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offer scholarships to nursing students? I am willing to work for them in return for the scholarship.

I believe you have to be a permanent employee with the VA for at least a year to be eligible for the scholarship.

They also offer an externship to junior level students called the VALOR (Veterans Administration Learning Opportunity Resident) program. They pay you quite nicely for a 400 hour summer externship, with no commitment. A great learning experience, and an opportunity to determine if you'd enjoy working in that facility/unit.

At the VA in my area, I worked as a student nurse technician (SNT) while in nursing school. After 6 months of employment as an SNT, I was eligible for a SNAP scholarship for $5000, for a year commitment. SNAP= Student Nurse Assistance Program, I think.

VALOR program is good, too. And after you're a full time employee, there are all kinds of scholarship opportunities. VANEEP will pay your salary while you take off and go to nursing school. Doesn't get much better than that!

GL!

Thank You Everyone

Thanks for all the good information!
