Update on Gross Out Co-Worker

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Last week she came into the nurses station and urinated while she told us something that was going on with a patient. We were shocked...I'm not talking a little dribble...pant leg was clinging to her leg with wetness. She left work and didn't come back the rest of the night.

When she came back the next day, we talked to her, suggesting disposable briefs (I hate using the word 'diaper' with an adult). Her response was that if she wears them, her pants won't fit because she lost so much weight she threw out her chubby pants (they are already bulging, pantyline cutting an outline). She is apologetic, but quite frank about her 'accidents', as if they are a fact of life that we all just have to deal with.

Didn't even get to approach the subject of her foul gas and B.O.

I think she must be under some kind of delusion about herself. It's simply bizarre. She seems to think that she is a little vixen, that some of our male staff has a crush on her (they say no way). She has even commented that since she 'looks so much younger than she really is, she would be willing to model for the hospital billboard. (she is 56, and looks every bit of it). Now, I am certainly not one to feel that heavy people can't model---I think it's great, in fact...but totally aside from her size, her saggy, disheveled, stinky presentation makes it unlikely that she is model material. To be fair, I am angry...angry that she is so inconsiderate, angry that she is not taking gentle cues, and frustrated at her---so I may be being more harsh than necessary.

But I doubt it.

This is definitely a health hazard and should be part of the disciplinary process. This should be escalated to the immediate supervisor or department director. Begin with documenting what happens, the nurse should be informed of the issues, then if this is a true health problem, have documentation from her physician. If this cannot be obtained, then escalate the problem further with verbal warnings, written warnings, etc. These things can be handled without the threat of suit, but you must have the backing of administration and HR.

I would love to see the documentation...

I, as well, am quite interested to see where this finally goes. It is my current online soap opera.....(dramatic voice over) Will the OP finally confront the phantom urinator? Or will they live in stinky squalor forever?

I hear ya! I'm just dying to know what happens in the season opener.

We all know that nurses have a twisted sense of humour.....that's part of our charm.

The woman is a disgrace to the profession. Since she has not taken any hints your next step is to formally complain to management. If you are worried about hurt feelings please remember your duty to advocate for your patients. Please remember that hand washing is the number one way to prevent the spread of infection. How can you allow a nurse to perform patient care in urine soaked pants? Not only is it unethical, it is setting the stage for some major lawsuits against the nurses, DON of that department and the hospital R/T delivering sub-standard patient care and allowing a situation to persist that increases the risk of spreading infection. When the poo-poo hits the fan do you think management is going to take the blame? In the courtroom, they will most likely say they were not informed of the situation! Now-you know what to do. DO IT NOW!!

Well-I would get her a box of incontinence pads and if she continues to piddle all over the facility I would first call the department of health.I am sure the state would have a lot to say about infection control -she is not only endangering her co-workers but the residents, too. Then-I would call the state dept of labor and see if you have any kind of recourse through them. This one co-worker is creating a hostile environment for all of you....I certainly would not leave a job I enjoyed because of this-but I would not stop until she was fixed or gone...

my opinion is they have given every chance in the world - i would first get a copy of that policy that she can use a towel for a pad ( if they actually made one or maybe it was just verbally telling her that) i would go to higher and higher ups as suggested until i got somewhere - this is just plain gross and obnoxious - there is NO reason for this as it is a continuing thing it was not just an accident or 2 - just my opinion.

yup there are great meds for incontinence...she needs to see her doc.

think she is way beyond meds but there is a great procedure out there i recently found out about called monarc subfascial hammock - just had it done and i am down from maxipads to nothing in 2 weeks - yeahhhhhh - lol - ( thought i was gonna be like her soon and using those wonderful not diapers lolol.

:rotfl: This thread has been quite enertaining since it's birth. Some of the replies, like above, really have me laughing hard!!!

:rotfl:

have to agree there- thank god for MONARC SUBFASCIAL HAMMOCK roflmao.

y'all are acting like there is something wrong with urinating on yourself...in public...in a hospital...as an employee of the hospital...while talking with fellow employees

I'm curious, I think I read she is a therapist; is she an occupational therapist? that would be quite ironic

i am totally flabbergasted that mgmt does not have concerns;

unless there is an undisclosed disability and they fear a discrimination suit.

it really is a pitiful situation.

leslie

she pissed herself while talking to coworkers; I'm thinking disability was quite disclosed at that time

I agree with Celia M....something psychological going on there....
