Ask your supervisor to schedule aVent Care orientation for you to attend as soon as possible. Since your hospital is now admitting vent patients, there is no question that you will find yourself in that same 'situation' a lot, and, sooner than later. After the orientation you will be able to care for vent patients with confidence backed up by knowing what to do through study. If you are worried about hurt feelings please remember your duty to advocate for your patients. Please remember that hand washing is the number one way to prevent the spread of infection. How can you allow a nurse to perform patient care in urine soaked pants? Not only is it unethical, it is setting the stage for some major lawsuits against the nurses, DON of that department and the hospital R/T delivering sub-standard patient care and allowing a situation to persist that increases the risk of spreading infection. When the poo-poo hits the fan do you think management is going to take the blame? In the courtroom, they will most likely say they were not informed of the situation! Now-you know what to do.
