Unna Boots

For all you wound or home health nurses out there - Is it policy for you to measure the circumference of the calf, or below knee, calf, ankle, prior to applying unna boots?

Anyone??

I did - I just thought it would be appropriate as a general nursing question/skill as well.

I currently have a patient that I apply an unna boot to twice weekly, his wound care doc does it the third. Our agency doesn't say we need to take any measurements and the doc didn't put it in her orders. My pt did tell me they have measured the circumference of his leg (no unna) at the office to assess his edema.

Thanks for your response!
