I am a traveling nurse who is getting ready to settle down and take a staff position at a local hospital which is a union facility. My question is: does the union contract predetermine a starting salary for an experienced nurse? If not, how do I determine what a fair wage is in my area? Any input would be greatly appreciated.:nurse:

Probably. I suggest you try looking online for union contracts in your area. If they are associated with the state nursing association you can start there. Otherwise try googling the name of the facility along with union and wages. Several locals post a copy of their contracts online and these usually include a wage scale.

Also they will probably specify if they pay parity, i.e. that that they give you full credit for your work experience.

Hope this helps.

While unions function differently, my experience with unions is that they determine a starting wage and yearly increments. Find out if your facility starts you off at year one (despite your experience and makes you work up) or if they give you some parity. When I first started at my current facility they started me at wage level 3, I had 8 years experience at that time..... but t was better than starting off at level 1.

I work at a union hospital and our salaries are determined by contract. I was told when I came in that I couldn't go to the top of the scale, but they did bring me in as high as the contract would allow with my years of experience. I took the position because it paid more than any other hospital in the area. I haven't had any problems, except around the holiday scheduling, working at a union hospital..

Both unionised facilities that I have/do work gave me parity for my years experience. I had to provide proof of hours worked from previous employers. This proved to be easier that I thought. The responses were usually in the mail to me within 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your help. I really hope this hospital compensates me for my experience. I can't imagine starting at the bottom again.
