Rephrasing my concerns

As an employee or student for clinicals??????????? As an employee some specialties yes some no, depends on the specialty and the state, hospital, etc. As a student..........no. Everyone does the same clinicals. Mandated.

Let me clarify the above.....yes each student may end up doing their med/surg rotation on a different floor some general floors and some more specialized---like onc, tele, ortho,, etc. And in psych maybe one student may do a child psych floor and one an adult MICA unit.,etc.......but other then that no.

From my experience, we didn't get to choose most of our clinical rotations, aside from time slot and instructor, but we didn't get to choose which specialties we rotated through, that is mandated by the school/nursing program. However we did get a senior preceptorship our final semester and in that particular semester we got to choose. I suppose it depends on the course you are taking. By chance can you find out from whoever is in charge of this course? If its a refresher, I have no idea how that works. Good luck to you

Since I got no reply with my first post ever in this forum, I'll make my question short and sweet:wink2: I am an LPN here in the U.S. going for my refresher course very soon (a BSN - RN grad in my country with little hospital experience). Would it be possible for me to jump right into a specialty area like dialysis rather than the general nursing rehab/subacute training for my clinicals? because I would prefer to work in a specialized field when I am done with my schooling. I need your input please. Thank you very much.

Yes it's possible to go right into a specialty area but it depends on the hospital. Some have cut and dry rules where they only hire nurses with x amount of years in y for specialty z. Others make decisions on a case by case basis depending on the applicant so if you make a good impression they will hire without the specialty experience and train you individually. For specialty areas such as ER or OR some hospitals have their own training fellowships and you'd be formally trained for the job through that process.
