Nurses General Nursing

Hey everyone.

Im looking into starting my nursing course sept 2018. Ive been so excited putting things in place to make this happen for me as its sorta been my dream. Lol. Until today that it. Im scrolling through facebook and I seen a friend posted a pic of getting a fish hook stuck in his finger.. I just realized, I hate blood I really cant handle any situation with it. Ive always wanted to do nursing but I never think of the fact that blood is a part of that. I always just think of taking care of someone else or basically the nice parts of nursing. Not the nitty gritty things that nurses actually do. Is this something I can honestly work through? I see alot of people saying it gets better with time... What if it doesnt? 😐😐😐

If it doesn't then you have an issue, yes? Blood is an inevitable part of nursing (and nursing school) - just as feces, urine, and vomit are.

I was a sympathetic puker. I had to get over it since I became an ER nurse. í ½í¸‚

Really, I decided that I might not like puke but I can control my gag reflex, so I did. I decided I wanted to be a nurse more than I wanted to avoid puke.

It's up to you if you want to avoid blood more than you want to be a nurse. Only you can decide if you have the self control to handle it.

I came at nursing later in life though. Could I have done it at 18? Maybe not but I didn't want it bad enough then. You have to decide how badly you want it. There are nursing jobs where you likely would not encounter a lot of blood but at some point you are going to see it and you would have to deal with that.

You can densensitize yourself to it. The feel of veins rolling around under the skin used to make me sick. Now look at what I do.. I love those veins now!
