PPD Requirements

Nurses General Nursing

So... I was (am?) scheduled to start a job tomorrow @ a SNF. I went this evening to have my results read from the first step of my PPD & the RN who read it (she may have been a supervisor, I'm not sure) told me that I couldn't start untill I had the second step completed. I told her HR scheduled me & she said that she'd call them & was on the phone when I left... I guess I should have stuck around to see if I'm going to work tomorrow, because now I'll be waiting for a phone call or trying to track HR down on a Sat.

Anyway, I talked to a friend who is also starting a new job in LTC & was told the same thing- she can't start untill her second part is read & completed. I've googled this, looked on the CDC's website, my state's website (Pennsylvania) & looked around on here but haven't found anything. I know the 2-step Mantoux is a new thing... Does anyone know about requirements to have both steps done before starting work? (Particularly in PA?)

I just want to know for sure that it's ok for me to be there if I'm told to go in. Thanks!

In Washington state, it is requiired to do the 1st step within 3 days of hire, and the second step 7-21 days after the first step. If an employee has a documented negative 2 step or 1 step within last 12 months from a previous employer we are only required to do a one step on day of hire.

Could this be the facility's policy?

thanks maedele... the handbook just said that they require a 2 step PPD & that it has to be admin. @ time of hire. but nothing in regard to when you can start. hmm.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

We do 1st step during initial physical and the 2nd 2 weeks later. Only the first step is required to be read before beginning employment.

Specializes in home health, dialysis, others.

I am under the impression that only the first step has to be negative to start work. Your HR person was correct. Go to work, they are expecting you.

yup, this was indeed the case mamamerlee. i got ahold of one of the nursing supervisors on sat AM, after some investigating she was able to call me back & tell me i was fine to come in.
