Positive thoughts needed for my brother!

Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone,

I'm still relatively new here... in case you haven't read my other posts, I'm planning a career switch into nursing but have not yet started school. So forgive me if this message has a lot of "layman's terms" and such - I have a lot to learn!

Please send your prayers and/or positive thoughts for my brother. He recently had surgery on his hand to remove some sort of large lump (can't remember what it was called). They had to go in through the back of his hand and go way down into his wrist to be sure they got it all, so my understanding is that it was fairly intense surgery. Unfortunately, he had it performed at a hospital which has a very poor reputation, by a doctor with a worse reputation. I know there are probably plenty of stories and rumors about all hospitals and doctors, but my mother worked there as an RN so a lot of what I have heard came from the horse's mouth.

Anyway, my brother is a trainer for several sports teams at the college he attends. He had to go to Florida with the girls softball team last week. My mother just got a call from a hospital (I think Ocala Regional Medical Center - anybody there???) telling her that he's been admitted, and has major infection going all the way up to his elbow. He's on morphine and something else (can't remember), but is still in a lot of pain.

From what my mother and brother are saying, apparently the incision was not closed properly after the surgery, and on top of that, the sutures were removed too soon. Both my mom & brother are very non-confrontational people, though, so they went along with whatever the doctor said was OK.

I don't know how serious something like this can get, but any input would be apprecited. Again, sorry if it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about, I have a lot to learn! But please send your positive thoughts and prayers for my brother.

Thanks,

Kathy

I got an update on my brother last night. Apparently at some point yesterday afternoon, he coded... had a reaction to some medication they gave him. Fortunately, they got him breathing again and he's improving. Still VERY drugged up, but was at least able to mumble a couple of words into the phone to my sister. And the doctor says there won't be any permanent damage to his hand or arm.

My mother flew down to FL to be with him. She had plans to go there next week anyway, and the airlines were kind enough to let her switch the dates on her ticket with no hassle. And her two sisters live about 1/2 hour from the hospital, so mom & my brother will have some additional support if needed. He's expected to be in the hospital at least a few more days.

Anyway, thanks again to all of you. It looks like things are improving, slowly but surely!

:)

Is he breathing independently, Kathy? I'm so sorry to hear about this. Sending you and your family sparkly, positive thoughts...

I work in a hospital with a bad reputation (which is why I refuse to work there when I graduate, but people don't understand that), and there was this one surgeon that we called Dr. Death. Almost everyone of his patients ended up with post-operative infections and he had a run of P.E.'s (I think 4 consecutive ones).

Anyway, he decided to 'retire' from surgery, and now he's the chief of our ER.

I hope your brother continues to improve. :)

Yes, he's breathing independently and continuing to improve. Thanks for asking! Dr. Death sure sounds scary!!! Glad he's not doing surgery any more...

I am so sorry for all your stress. Warm thoughts your way!
