pain between shoulders - dumb question!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Tonight I had an episode of SEVERE pain between my shoulder blades that radiated up my neck, down my shoulders to my arms and through to my chest, although the back pain was the WORST. It almost feels as though someone is squeezing my trapezius muscles as hard as they can. The pain is so bad that I can't sit still, and I actually start to panic a little bit.

This is the third time this has happened, also the longest lasting episode, in the last 3 years or so. All three times I have had an alcoholic drink on a fairly empty stomach. So I am thinking either stomach, gallbladder, or pancreas. Am I way off? I am not a GI nurse and am not really sure. I've tried looking up my symptoms but can't find any that fit. I was really ready to go to the ER tonight, but finally it let up. It lasted close to an hour, not very long, but for the amount of pain I was in, long enough.

Any ideas?

Please get checked out ASAP, I am female and at 40 had the same symptoms, dx?, MI with CABG, don't mean to alarm you, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree, sounds like GB...but the only way to know for sure is to get that work-up. Let us know what the doc says...

I have the same problem, and if you find out what it is, please let me know! I first went to my regular doc who gave me an EKG and although it was normal, she sent me to cardio to be sure. I had an echo, a stress test, bloodwork, and a holter monitor to no avail (thankfully). My doc is saying GI but what kind of GI? I had a whole workup a few years ago and I have reflux and a hiatal hernia. My gallbladder's been removed. Anyone have any experience with a hiatal hernia causing this type of pain? Mine lasts a few days to a week and is as severe as yours ParrotHeadRN for about an hour at first but then becomes bearable for the rest of the time. It's no fun! I wish you luck...let us know what happens, but don't worry in the meantime...worrying will get you nowhere :)

Hope you take all of this wonderful advice and support and get yourself in to be evaluated!!!

You guys are awesome! I did think cardiac, but I am 34 years old, and female, so I just blew it off. I will get it checked, though, and let you know. Thanks so much!

Please do not think young age will exclude you from cardiac problems. It is not the norm granted but I myself am proof that it can and does happen. I am 33 yrs old weigh 130 lbs and have awesome chol. and trigly. levels. I have been having chest pain but because of my age did not take it seriously. I put myself on the monitor at work and to my shock I had inverted T wave and ST depression. I then realized this pain in my chest, shoulders, and heartburning feeling in my neck was truley cardiac. I just went for my cardiolyte stress test on Mon. and as soon as I got on the treadmill the ischemic changes became so sever they halted the procedure desipte no apparent symptomatoloy at the time. I now have to undergo cardiac cath and stent placement for 2 blocked cor. art. I have always followed a good diet, but my family hx is chuck full of early MI.

So please do not think underestimate your symptoms. Hopefully your condition is nothing serious. Good luck!
